The Women’s Literary Club members were guests of the Bradford Senior Center on Friday helping to celebrate the Center’s 50th year.
President Mary Lou Detweiler welcomed everyone and introduced the newest member, Vera Cloud. Carol Shannon introduced Carol Steck, the director of the Bradford Senior Center who has been with the Office of Human Services out of Ridgeway since 2003 and has been working with the Center for 20 years as of next month. Carol shared wonderful information about the busy Center including lunches which are served each day, a monthly birthday club, and a baking club where members select a recipe, bring in the needed ingredients, make it, and serve it during lunch.
Other activities include ten cent Bingo on Thursdays, a craft day, and an exercise class where even a ninety year old attends on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This month they are celebrating Halloween with a pumpkin carving contest. It was surprising to learn that the Center can do taxes for seniors and they even sell dog licenses until June.
The Center depends on donations to operate and there is usually a fundraiser activity each month — even though they receive much needed donations from the City of Bradford, townships, county commissioners, and especially the United Way. They will be having a pie sale for the November fundraiser.
It was also interesting to learn that the Chamber of Commerce gives the Center fifteen fifty dollar Chamber gift certificates each month to share with members.
Refreshments were served by the Center ladies and were donated by the Friendship Table. Among the treats were delicious cream puffs which were enjoyed in memory of Literary Club member Harrijane Hannon, as they had been her favorite.
President Detweiler closed the meeting by inviting members to donate to the Center at their convenience.
The next meeting will be held Oct. 27 with Sally Costik sharing “Strange Happenings Around Bradford.”
