STATE COLLEGE — Three area high school golfers competed in the PIAA State Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Penn State’s Blue and White courses.
Bradford High’s Jake Franz tied for 65th of 72 in Class AAA boys play with rounds of 79 and 83 for a 162 total. Hunter Swidzinski of Butler won the title with a 137.
In girls competition, Oswayo Valley’s Rylee Thompson placed 34th of 36 in Class AA with two 104 rounds for 208 total. Anna Swan of North East prevailed with a 143.
Bradford’s Payten Leet also finished 34th out of 36 in Class AAA with rounds of 89 and 95 for a 184 total. Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Whitemarsh paced the field with a 140.
Franz, a senior, earned two individual District 9 titles and also led the Owls to a team championship over his high school career.
“He has been our leader the last two seasons while playing other fall sports,” BHS coach Travis Faulkner said. “I commend Jake on his dedication to the sport and the team. He spent all summer playing golf and that carried him through the fall season. Jake will be missed next season as he was a great leader of our team.”

Mitch Strauss had a goal and assisted on Andrew Mangold’s marker as Bradford High finished the regular season 8-9 overall and 5-7 in league.
Tristen Dragoone made 12 saves and Aiden Abbott two in net for the Owls.
“I thought we played well, despite the score,” BHS coach Peter Butler said. “That’s the first time we scored two goals against McDowell.”

Haley Keane registered nine kills, Taylor Gigliotti five digs, and Kalie Dixon 24 assists to power Bradford to the sweep, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-23.
Addie Carter and Dani Ordiway chipped in seven and five kills, respectively, while Kendall Case had five digs to help round out the Owls’ second victory of the season.
St. Marys was coming off a home sweep of Ridgway on Monday. In the 25-9, 26-24, 25-12 win, Rylee Nicklas notched eight kills, 19 assists and three aces.
Jill Kline (4 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces), Hannah Ritter (8 kills, 7 digs), Molly Hanslovan (8 kills, 12 assists), Ava Johnson (3 aces) and Jianna Gerg (7 digs) also keyed the Lady Dutch against the Elkers.
Elk County Catholic 3, Ridgway 0
ST. MARYS — Kiri Emmert totaled 19 assists, four aces and 14 service points to propel Elk County Catholic, 25-7, 25-6, 25-16.
Tori Newton (20 kills), Reagan Bauer (9 kills, 7 aces, 13 service points), Ashlynn Schutz (3 kills, 2 aces), Lucy Klawuhn (3 kills, ace), and Isabella Macer (15 assists) also paced ECC, which improved to 13-0.
Six Lady Crusader seniors were honored before the match. The group of Emmert, Macer, Bauer, Klawuhn, Newton, and Laci Jovenitti have amassed 676 kills and 166 aces.
“The six girls worked so hard during the summer to get ready for the season,” ECC coach Tricia Bauer said. “They are doing really good things in the gym and hopefully we can have a much longer season.
