Scheduled to take place at East Rochester High School on October 22, the Scare Brain Cancer Away 5K Run/Walk will benefit the Patient Needs Fund. This donation-based organization helps fund cancer treatments at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.
Proceeds from the run/walk will be used to purchase gift cards to local gas, grocery and general merchandise stores, and will be donated to people undergoing cancer treatments.
The race, which is celebrating its 14th anniversary in 2022, has become an East Rochester tradition, according to East Rochester Clerk Misty Galiotti.
“What’s great is that it’s also an event for all skill levels,” Galiotti says.
The 2021 event saw more than 320 participants, and while a majority came from Rochester it attracted runners from five states, including Illinois and Florida.
Registration is underway at runsignup.com/Race/NY/EastRochester/ScareBrainCancerAway. The fee for both the 3.1-mile run and the 1.5-mile walk is $30 and includes a race shirt.
The top three finishers in each race will win a cash prize, and the top three in each age group will receive an award.
“I participated in the Brain Cancer 5K last year and it was a lot of fun,” Galiotti says. “Some people came in their Halloween costumes and there were a lot of young kids who participated as well. It’s a great event for a great cause.”
