HS Wrap: Diaz, Taylor lead Bradford XC; Franz paces Owls golf

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Manny Diaz overcame wet course conditions Tuesday and led the Bradford boys cross country team to its seventh and eighth wins of the season.

Diaz finished first overall in a stellar time of 16:23, leading the Owls to victories over Punxsutawney and Brookville. Bradford defeated Punxsy, 29-30, and Brookville, 27-30.

“Several of our top guys weren’t completely healthy; fighting off colds,” Bradford coach Tom Tessena said. “They did well for the shape they were in. We’re going to have a tough time at Districts with Punxsy, and the secret is to get our fifth and sixth guys up a bit higher.”

Leo Paterniti finished fifth for Bradford in 17:53, while Brayden Frair was 7th in 18:23. Ian Pilon was eighth in 18:27, Joe Caruso was 19th in 20:19, Marcus Terwilliger was 21st in 20:50 and Danny Marasco was 26th in 22:13.

The Fretz Middle School team improved to 8-0, led by Evan Troisi’s first-place finish in 12:10.

Kadyn Tessena was fourth in 13:07, Evan Soto was fifth in 13:08, Maverick Smith was sixth in 13:01, Kyler Simmons was seventh in 13:53, Owen Blouser was ninth in 15:20 and Eddie Youmans was 11th in 16:32.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite Caitlyn Taylor’s first-place finish, the Bradford girls cross country team dropped a pair of Tuesday meets to Punxsutawney and Brookville.

Taylor crossed the line in 21:19, claiming her first varsity win.

“The girls looked much better running (Tuesday) than the past two meets,” Bradford coach Mark Kelley said. “They got out better in the first mile, which is a good sign of improvement.

“We are missing Korie (Dixon) due to being sick and that is a big loss for us. (Taylor) continues to run great. She got out well and pulled away from the Punxsy runner in the last mile.”

Leila Bines finished eighth in 23:53, her best time of the year.

“She has run well in practice the last two weeks, which has transferred over to her races,” Kelley said.

Abbigail Schleicher was 11th in 24:07, also her best time of the year. Elisa Hayden was 13th in 25:08, Jennifer Bouquin was 18th in 26:58, Mayle Smith was 19th in 27:13, Joleen Weimer was 21st in 31:25 (a personal best) and Madison Vinelli was 24th in 35:00.

The Lady Owls junior high team picked up a pair of wins, improving to 4-0 on the year.

Kendyl Cruz won the race in 13:56, while Rylann Terwilliger was second in 14:53. Anna Benedict was fourth in 15:44, Brianna Haven was fifth in 15:48, Addison Benson was seventh in 16:13, Jackie Sipko was eighth in 16:18, Brooke Clouser was 10th in 17:13, Olivia Funk was 11th in 17:42, Sam McCaul was 12th in 17:50, Madison Ronan was 17th in 18:49, Regan Dillaman was 23rd in 22:14 and Shyla Williams was 27th in 27:26.

    BOYS GOLF

    Bradford 222,

    Ridgway 229

Jake Franz medaled and Bradford edged Ridgway, winning by seven strokes while enduring the hard rain showers that popped up around Pine Acres Country Club on Tuesday.

Franz’s 37 paced the field, while Brayden Wilt added a 44 for Bradford. Kole Asti and Evan Gustafson led Ridgway, each shooting 43.

“Everyone played well, even when it was pouring down rain,” Bradford coach Travis Faulkner said. “ (Franz) again was medalist, having another consistent round for us. He is really coming into form and is ready to try and make it back to states again. (Wilt) played well again. His iron play and putting are improving every match.”

Ridgway: Kole Asti 43, Evan Gustafson 43, Logan Jordan 45, Brent DeFranco 45, Ethan Stretch 53
