Bradford Township Police responded to a report of an accident at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to police, the driver of a tractor-trailer was attempting to merge onto U.S. Route 219 south from the Owens Way ramp when due to slick road conditions, he lost control of the vehicle, which slid into a jack-knifed position before coming to a final rest over the embankment.
Traffic was restricted from using the Owens Way ramp, according to Bradford Township Police Chief Robb Shipman, until the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and G.W. Hawbaker could address the issue.
Due to the ongoing construction and wet conditions Tuesday afternoon, the roadway became very slick.
“Hawbaker recently only partially paved the Owens Way ramp, which left a piece of the south bound lane exposed with material laid down before the blacktop which apparently becomes like ice when it gets wet,” explained Shipman.
Then, at 3 p.m. the Bradford Volunteer Township Fire Department was dispatched to assist the township police with the disabled tractor-trailer. According to Shipman, the roadway was treated by PennDOT, Hawbaker and reopened by 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Coincidentally, at 2:29 p.m Tuesday the Kane Fire Department was dispatched to the Dollar General for a different tractor-trailer which traveled over the embankment.
