Knotted at eight in the bottom of the 5th, Macaibe Splain hit a grounder and drove in a run to break the tie and lift Bradford to a 9-8 victory over Mount Jewett/Smethport in the first round of the Little League District 10 major division baseball consolation bracket.
In a high-scoring affair, Splain was key defensively all night, making seven putouts, most in the game.
Bradford jumped out to the early lead after Max Gow drove in a pair with a single. Bradford added five more in the 3rd inning led by Ryan Schenfield, Lucas Wallace, Jamin Bell and Derek Dixon, all driving in runs in the frame.
Smethport/Mount Jewett quickly rallied, scoring four runs in the 4th inning to take an 8-7 lead. Jude Kisko and Canon Gustafson each drove in a run.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Bradford’s Derek Dixon singled in a run to tie the game at eight before Splain broke the tie in the 5th.
Bradford accumulated 14 hits in the game. Jackson Peterson, Wallace, Schenfield and Owen Strotman all managed multiple-hit games.
Gustafson went 3-for-4 to lead Smethport/Mount Jewett. As a team, Smethport/Mount Jewett racked up eight hits.
Kisko started the game for Smethport/Mount Jewett. The right-hander went 3.2 innings, allowed seven runs on eight hits and struck out five.
Bradford will play the winner of Fox Township and Brockway in a second-round elimination game Thursday.
