DANVILLE (TNS) — Someone made it rain “money” on Route 54 in this community — or so drivers thought. Turns out the $100 bills scattered across Route 54 were fake.
Danville Police Detective Sgt. Justin Stanley, some people who discovered the money was counterfeit bills turned in it at a Sunoco convenience store.
“We cleaned up as best we could,” Stanley explained.
According to The Daily Item, Stanley said police received a call about the fake bills scattered at Route 54 between a Wendy’s at Route 11 and the convenience store around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
“It looks pretty real till you get close to them,” Stanley said, noting the bills had Benjamin Franklin’s photo on the front and the words “FOR MOTION PICTURE PURPOSES” on the upper right.
Stanely informed businesses about the fake bills, and the business association sent out an email warning about the bills: “Please be aware of the bills that your business is taking; if possible use a counterfeit detector pen.”
Businesses were asked to contact the police if they come across the bills.
Danville police posted a warning about the bills on Facebook: “So someone tried to make it rain like a bad TikTok video. $100 bills flying across SR54..THEY ARE FAKE PEOPLE!!! For the love of everything DO NOT STOP or cause an accident trying to pick these up. Anyone caught trying to pass fake hundos will be arrested. You’ve been warned.”
It’s unknown who scattered the bills on the road, as no one reported seeing it. The detective noted fake bills could be bought on Amazon. “It either had to be a prank or somebody in the movie business,” he said.
