ALTOONA — Andrew Kane placed 2nd in long jump with a leap of 19-11.5 in very poor weather conditions, leading the Bradford boys track and field team at Friday’s Altoona Invitational.
Kane also placed 12th in the 100-meter dash at a rain-soaked meet that featured several power programs from Northern and Central Pennsylvania. Bradford’s 3200-meter relay team of Manny Diaz, Ian Pilon, Jerid Wilmoth and Leo Paterniti placed 3rd in 8:35.13 behind only Altoona and State Collete.
“These are two of the top 10 relays in the state, so being close to them was quite an accomplishment,” Bradford coach Tom Tessena said. “We still need to get better by districts because DuBois has a very good team. We beat them (Friday), but they were missing one of their best guys.”
Troy Adkins placed 16th in the 110 hurdles, while Parker Shipman was 16th in shot put and Chris Rodriguez was close behind in 20th. Joe Caruso posted a personal best in the 1600, Wilmoth long jumped 17-7 and Joe Cary threw 97-9 in javelin before weather conditions worsened and the Owls elected to save themselves in some events.
“We decided to leave because of the weather to not risk injuries or sickness,” Tessena said. “The weather actually got better after we started home. We really needed this competition in our other stronger events, but it wasn’t worth the risk today.”
Bradford will host Punxsutawney Tuesday for Senior Night.
