MR. STUCK: Back in the day there were bright green stickers on items that parents didn’t want their children to get ahold of for fear of being poisoned — Mr. Yuk — today, there should be stickers for adults who are noticing that they might have a problem with alcohol consumption.
‘Drinking was fun… until it wasn’t’ is a saying in some recovery circles, which helps identify the point in time where alcohol use transformed from an enjoyable experience into something problematic.
Some drinkers, however, don’t realize they have a problem. They haven’t yet felt the traditional health issues, or may not have realized that their health has been declining over the years. There are other ways of recognizing alcohol has become a problem, taken control:
There are ways to take the control back. If sobriety is something that is in your future, get help. Some drinkers can do it on their own, others cannot. There is no shame in asking for help. Many health insurance companies cover treatment programs, there are church-sponsored support groups, and many call centers are available to talk you through a rough patch.
If need be, make up some stickers and put them on the fridge, call them Mr. Stuck stickers, and use them to remind yourself that you will not be stuck much longer.
