HS Wrap: O-E baseball, softball sweep OV; Coudy, Smethport split

SHINGLEHOUSE — A mid-day location change made Otto-Eldred the “home” team in Monday evening’s game at Oswayo Valley.

What was supposed to be the Lady Terror softball team’s home opener and senior night turned into yet another road game, but O-E didn’t seem to mind. The Lady Terrors slugged the ball as they have all season, and with a 16-strikeout performance from Bri Heller, cruised to a 10-3 victory at OV.

Heller helped her 16-strikeout effort by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI. Hannah Gordon also homered as part of a 3-for-3 evening that saw her drive in three runs.

Katie Sheeler went 2-for-4 with a triple and Laya Phillips added an RBI for O-E, which jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the 1st inning and never looked back. Brooke George went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for OV, while Laya Phillips added an RBI double.

    Coudersport 15, Smethport 10

COUDERSPORT — Coudersport snatched a victory away from Smethport, as a nine-run 7th inning was the difference-maker in a back-and-forth affair.

Coudy jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the 1st, but Smethport roared back with three runs in the 3rd, eventually carrying a 10-6 lead into the final frame. The Lady Falcon bats came alive, however, before Emma Saulter retired the Lady Hubbers in order in the bottom of the 7th.

Sierra Myers had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Coudy, while Savannah Myers tacked on two hits, two runs and three RBI. Alissa Dunn added three hits, two RBI and a run.

Saulter tossed four strikeouts in three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and three walks along the way. Maddy Faes led Smethport at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Dani Nelson added two hits, two RBI and two runs for Smethoprt, while Hope Peterson and Janell Dinch each had a hit and an RBI.

    Elk County Catholic 10,

    Kane 0, 6 innings

ST. MARYS — Ellie Baron had three hits and an RBI to lead Elk County Catholic over Kane.

Syd Alexander and Caitlyn Vollmer each added two hits for ECC, while Alexander also drove in two runs and scored two of her own. Emily Mourer got the win, pitching six shutout innings while striking out five and scattering four hits.

DuBois Central Catholic 9, Johnsonburg 7

JOHNSONBURG — Johnsonburg rallied back from what was once a seven-run deficit, but fell short against DuBois Central Catholic.

Julie Jones and Sophia Sorg each had three hits and two RBI for the Ramettes, while Jenna Kasmierski added two hits and an RBI. Trailing 8-1, Jburg scored four runs in the 5th, but rallies in the 6th and 7th were each held to one run.

    BASEBALL

    Smethport 11, Coudersport 0

COUDERSPORT — Slowly but surely, Smethport built its lead.

The Hubbers scored in every inning against Coudersport, inching their way to what became a lopsided victory by evening’s end. Brandon Higley, Noah Lent and Preston Alfieri each had two hits, leading the Hubbers to another league victory.

Higley drove in two runs, as well, while Alfieri drove in three. Alfieri provided a key two-run single with two outs in the 3rd that extended Smethport’s lead to 5-0.

Alex Ognen was masterful in 5.2 innings pitched, stirking out 11 while surrendering three walks and three hits. Higley got the last four outs, striking out one.

Garrett Kellert had two hits for Coudy.

SHINGLEHOUSE — An eight-run 6th inning sealed a league victory for Otto-Eldred, as the Terrors got back in the win column behind a three-hit night from Austin Cousins.

Cousins drove in three runs along the way, while Andrew Schenfield added two hits and two RBI for O-E. Max Splain struck out 10 batters in six strong innings on the mound, scattering five hits in an economic, 76-pitch outing.

Ian Bilski struck out four batters in four innings pitched for OV, and of the seven runs he allowed, just one was earned.

DUBOIS — DuBois Central Catholic’s early offense was all starting pitcher Carter Hickman would need, as he blanked Johnsonburg and helped DCC earn a season sweep of the Rams.

Jefferson Freeburg tallied six strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched for Jburg.
