HS Softball: O-E drops pitcher’s duel; Coudy, ECC win big

WELLSVILLE, N.Y. — An inter-state softball matchup Monday night turned into a pitcher’s duel between Wellsville’s Makenzie Cowburn and Otto-Eldred’s Bri Heller.

Both pitchers marked double-digit strikeouts and had just one walk between them, but it was Cowburn’s team that emerged with a non-league win as the Lions held off the Terrors 3-1.

Cowburn struck out 16 batters with just one walk, holding O-E to two hits. Heller had 11 strikeouts and no walks.

Wellsville built a 3-0 lead after the fifth inning, needing some “small ball” to do it.

“In the second inning Makenna Dunbar hit a ball that I thought was out of the park,” said Lions coach Matt Burke, whose team ranks fourth in the state in Class B. “She put a really good swing on the ball and the wind kept it in. From that moment on it was apparent that we needed to play some small ball to get some runs across the plate.

“Makenzie Cowburn was electric tonight and defensively we made all the plays.”

For its first run, Wellsville got lead off runner Emma Dunaway on base in the fourth and moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt by Brazen Beckwith and a Cowburn single before Marissa Ordway brought her home with a squeeze bunt.

Wellsville tacked on two more in the fifth, with Marley Adams bringing in Sawyer Burke on an RBI single after Burke’s single, then Dunaway drove in Adams on a squeeze.

Dunbar also had a double for Wellsville (11-2).

Jessie Hall had an RBI single in the sixth for Otto-Eldred (2-1).

    Coudersport 10,

    Oswayo Valley 2

SHINGLEHOUSE — Coudersport’s offense was its usual self against Oswayo Valley, but Emma Saulter and Savannah Myers stole the show in the pitcher’s circle.

The duo combined to shut down the OV offense, pairing for 10 strikeouts while allowing just three walks and six hits. The Lady Falcons gave themselves some late breathing room with a four-run 7th, adding to the lead they had built early in the game.

Madyson Dubots-Angood and Mackenzie Gentzyel each recorded three hits for Coudy, the former driving in two runs and the latter driving in one. Sierra Myers, Savannah Myers and Ryelle Black each added two hits, with Sierra Myers driving in three runs and Black driving in two.

Shayden Mesler led OV’s offense with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while MaKenzie Mesler struck out eight batters in the circle.

Elk County Catholic 19, Kane 2, 3 innings

KANE — Elk County Catholic’s potent lineup was on display once again, as Lucy Klawuhn’s 4-for-4 evening from atop the Lady Crusader order keyed a comfortable victory over Kane.

Klawuhn drove in three runs and scored three of her own in a game that saw ECC score seven times in the 1st inning and 10 more in the 2nd. Gabby Weisner added two hits, two runs and an RBI while Lydia Anderson racked up two hits, three runs and three RBI.

Emily Mourer got the win for ECC, striking out two while allowing two walks and three hits in three innings of work. She added a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, driving in five runs while scoring one run and walking once.

Tessa Fledderman added three RBI for ECC, while Syd Alexander drove in two. Hailey Slater had a hit and two RBI for Kane.

    Johnsonburg 20, Brookville 3,

    4 innings (Game 1)

BROOKVILLE — Johnsonburg started the first leg of its doubleheader against Brookville strongly, scoring six runs in the 1st inning before a pair of five-run frames ended the contest ahead of schedule.

Natalie Dunworth, Jenna Kasmierski, Julie Peterson, Shelby Sorg and Maria Casilio each tallied two hits for the Ramettes. Casilio drove in six runs, four of which came on a grand slam in the 2nd.

Sorg drove in four runs while Peterson added two RBI. Peterson shined in the pitcher’s circle for Jburg, striking out 10 batters while allowing three runs on three hits.

    Johnsonburg 14, Brookville 0,

    5 innings (Game 2)

BROOKVILLE — Johnsonburg’s dominance continued into Game 2 of the doubleheader, when Natalie Dunworth went 4-for-4 with three runs scored to lead another offensive outburst.

Much like in Game 1, Jburg scored six runs in the 1st inning, eventually sealing its mercy-rule victory with a four-run 4th. Julie Jones and Shelby Sorg each had two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Ramettes, while Junna Kasmierski also drove in two runs.

Julie Peterson, Payton Delhunty and Zoey Grunthaner each added two hits for Jburg. Jones got the win in the circle, recording eight strikeouts without allowing a walk. She surrendered just two hits.

    LITTLE LEAGUE

    MAJORS

Mt. Jewett 9, Port Allegany Orange 5

Bria Petrof doubled and recorded nine strikeouts, leading Mt. Jewett on both sides of the ball to a victory over Port Allegany Orange.

Addy Mix went 3-for-3 at the plate for Mt. Jewett, while Addisen Taylor struck out eight batters for Port. Taylor, Bria Wilcox and Siena Lathrop all singled for Port, and Gianna Glasgow doubled.
