Costanzo, Ackley among latest ‘Classic’ additions

The 48th annual Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic, set for the night of Aug. 6 at Bradford High’s Parkway Field, has announced the eighth group of players to participate in the game, this time a group that numbers six.

The former Big 30 All-Star Football Game, founded by the late Don Raabe, matches graduated senior stars from each side of the border with the series tied, 22-22-3, though Pennsylvania hasn’t lost to New York since the 2015 renewal.

Proceeds benefit area charities and, over the first 47 years, the game has donated more than $1.8 million to local causes.

Today’s eighth group of players adds three to each roster, bringing to 76 the number of acceptances, 38 to each team, with squads ultimately numbering some 42 members.

Today’s New York additions are Olean High’s Devin Kayes and Pioneer’s Logan Ellis and Jasiah Jarocinski.

Pennsylvania’s addees are Kane’s Jake Costanzo and Shane Ackley and Sheffield’s Cooper Traister.

COSTANZO was a 5-foot-11, 205-pound two-way lineman who was a two-time Big 30 All-Star and two-time District 9 Large School all-star on offense and was Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year as a senior.

A member of the National Honor Society, he has yet to choose a college but will major in physical therapy.

Of the Charities Classic, he said, “Ever since I was a kid I have dreamed of representing my school in this prestigious football game. The guys who played in this game before showed me the true honor of playing in the game and motivated me to work hard every day leading up to this point.”

His greatest memory playing football was “after suffering a season-ending injury, my teammates told me everything they accomplished the rest of the year was for me.”

Ackley was a 5-foot-9, 140-pound wide receiver/defensive back and a Pa. Football News All-Academic team selection.

He will attend Penn Tech and major in building construction technology.

His favorite football memory was “my tip-toe catch along the sidelines against St. Marys.”

Traister was a 5-foot-8, 155-pound running back/linebacker who, besides football, lettered three times in wrestling, being Sheffield’s outstanding wrestler as a freshman.

He will attend Pitt-Bradford and major in ultrasound tech.

KAYES was a 6-foot-1, 240-pound two-way tackle who received the WNY Lineman of the Year Award and a Cross-Training Athletes Character Award, OHS’ Walter Reisner citation.

He will attend Alfred State College and major in heavy equipment operation.

Ellis was a 5-foot-10, 175-pound tight end/linebacker who was a first-team All-WNY selection on offense and set Pioneer’s tackles record.

He will pursue a career in either real estate or business. Of the Charities Classic he said, “I’m excited to play in the Big 30 Game and consider it an honor to be invited because my brother didn’t play in the game.”

His favorite memory playing football was “scoring my first touchdown.”

Jarocinski was a 6-foot-5, 275-pound offensive tackle/defensive end who was Pioneer ‘s Defensive MVP and a Trench Trophy nominee as a senior. He was also the Panthers’ basketball MVP, a first-team league all-star on defense in football and second-team all-star in basketball.

He has yet to choose a college but will major in athletic training and hopes to play sports.

His favorite memory playing football was “making the first team defense and getting an interception my senior year at defensive end.”
