PORT ALLEGANY — Down its starting point guard, the Port Allegany girls basketball team used scoring from throughout its lineup to beat Austin, 37-35, to headline Wednesday night’s North Tier action.
Evin Stauffer scored 12 points while Kayleigha Dowell added 10, and Port held off an Austin comeback despite sinking just two of eight free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.
“We could have done a better job closing the game out,” said Port coach Jamie Evens. “A few more makes would have made it a little less nerve wracking. They kept the pressure on us and hit a few big shots to make it close.”
Ella Brewer led the Lady Panthers’ offensive effort with 12 points, adding four steals and five rebounds, as well. Isabella Rees scored all eight of her points in the second half, and tacked on four steals, four assists and four rebounds. Austin led after one and trailed by just one possession at the end of the following two stanzas, but couldn’t overcome the Lady Gators in the end.
“Everyone kind of stepped up at different points of the game,” Evens said. “We turned it over quite a bit, which is kind of our nemesis. With a young team, that’s something we continue to work on.”
Stauffer recorded eight rebounds, six steals and three assists for Port, while Dowell tacked on eight rebounds and three assists. Ella Moses had 11 rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks to go with seven points.

DUKE CENTER — In a game played much closer than the final score indicated, Otto-Eldred survived a flurry from Coudersport to complete a perfect 16-0 slate in the North Tier League.
The Lady Terrors led by just one point entering the fourth quarter, but turned it on in the final period, out-scoring Coudy, 18-4.
“(Coudersport) really came ready to play and gave us a real test,” O-E coach Shawn Gray said. “Our three guards played great in the second half.”
Katie Sheeler scored 16 points to lead O-E, tacking on six steals and two assists along the way. It was O-E’s seniors that came alive late, however, as Suzie Rounsville and Hannah Gordon each hit a big second-half 3-pointer.
Bri Heller pulled down six rebounds and swiped four steals to go with eight points for the Lady Terrors, while Brooke Close added eight points and Anna Merry scored six. Coudy was led by Liz Frame, who scored 11 points, while Sierra Myers tacked on 10.
Each team will now turn its attention to the playoffs.
“We can’t wait to see who, where and when we play next,” Gray said.
