HS Hoops: Port girls come back to beat Kane; O-E, Smethport, CC boys win big

KANE — Something must have clicked for the Port Allegany girls basketball team as the fourth quarter began, as the Lady Gators put up 23 points in the final eight minutes to secure a narrow, 39-34 comeback win at Kane on Wednesday.

“We were much more aggressive offensively in the second half and took the ball to the basket strong,” Port Allegany coach Jamie Evens said. “When we didn’t finish, we were fortunate to draw fouls.”

Eight of those 23 fourth-quarter points came from Ella Moses, who scored 12 points before fouling out. Kayleigha Dowell also scored 12 points for Port.

After falling behind 21-4 at halftime, the Lady Gators allowed just three points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth.

Maya Smith led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 11 points.

Whistles flew throughout Kane’s gym, as the two teams combined for 46 free throws. Kane struggled at the line, shooting just 3-of-15. While Port missed more opportunities at the stripe, the Lady Gators were able to draw enough fouls to shoot 31 free throws.

Kalie Dixon led Bradford in scoring with 12 points. No other Lady Owl scored more than three points.

Included in Alexander’s hot-shooting night were four 3-pointers, with three of them coming in the first half.
