BOYS HOOPS: Port beats Bradford; ECC, St. Marys beat Coudy

    GIRLS

    NON-LEAGUE

    Port Allegany 31, Bradford 19

Port Allegany took an early lead and held on for a road win over Bradford on Saturday.

Early on, Port took advantage of Bradford’s aggressive defense. They went to the line six times in the first quarter alone and converted 5-for-6. The first half was big for Port’s offense, with Kayleigha Dowell scoring seven of her game-leading 11 points. She would add seven rebounds to help the Lady Gators on defense.

Ella Moses did a bit of everything for Port.

She scored six points in the paint, pulled down 12 boards, nabbed seven steals, dished out four assists and earned three blocks. She wasn’t alone for the Lady Gators when it came to stuffing the stat sheet. Evin Stauffer had four points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

But while Bradford struggled in the first half, its defense keyed a comeback in the second.

The Lady Owls forced 16 turnovers in the second half to key their surge, especially in the fourth quarter.

Carli Persichini scored eight points to lead Bradford. She hit two 3-pointers and had five points in the fourth quarter when Bradford made the game close. Alanna Benson had all five of her points in the fourth quarter too. Makenzie Taylor and Abbi Schleicher had a bucket each in the third quarter.

But one player that helped tilt the game back into Port’s favor was Jessica Borowsky.

Borowsky had five points and five rebounds while coming off the bench.

“Solid five-and-five for Borowsky off the bench, career high in both.” said Port head coach Jamie Evens. “Happy with our defensive end holding Benson to two field goals and Dixon to one.”

    Dowel 4 2-2 11, Moses 3 0-0 6, Nelson 2 0-2 5, Borowsky 2 1-2 5, Stauffer 0 4-6 4. Totals:

    Bradford (19)Persichini 2 2-4 8, Benson 2 1-3 5, Dixon 1 0-0 2, Taylor 1 0-0 2, Schleicher 1 0-0 2. Totals:

Three-point goals: Port 2 (Nelson, Dowell), Bradford 2 (Persichini); Total fouls: Port 5, Bradford 12; fouled out:

Elk County Catholic 40, Coudersport 27

COUDERSPORT — Elk County Catholic’s offense was hot early and didn’t let up in a road win.

Syd Alexander had 13 points while hitting a triage of triples to pilot the ECC attack. She was joined by Lucy Klawhun and Tori Newton who scored nine and eight points respectively.

The Lady Crusaders kept Coudersport’s offense under wraps until the second half.

Liz Frame had 11 points for Coudy, including two 3-pointers in the final two periods. Emma Chambers and Belle Porterfield combined for 15 points. Chambers splashed another two 3-pointers for the Lady Falcons.

    Alexander 4 2-2 13, Klawhun 5 0-0 9, Newton 4 0-0 8, Maurer 2 0-0 4, Straub 1 0-0 3, Hasselman 1 1-2 3, Weisner 0 0-2 0. Totals:

    Coudersport (27)Frame 4 1-3 11, Chambers 3 0-0 8, Porterfield 3 0-0 7. Totals:

Three-point goals: ECC 5 (Alexander 3, Straub, Klawhun), Coudy 5 (Chambers 2, Frame 2, Porterfield); Total fouls: ECC 4, Coudy 10; fouled out:

    BOYS

    St. Marys 58, Coudersport 47

COUDERSPORT — No one scored in double-digits for St. Marys. But four leading scorers gave the Flying Dutchmen a comeback win on Saturday.

Tanner Fox, Quin Gavazzi, Hunter Hetrick and Zack Thorwart put up nine points apiece to lead St. Marys’ offense. Gavazzi and Hetrick scored most of their points in the second half to help St. Marys comeback. Throwart scored big in the first and third period while Fox spread out his scoring.

Coudersport was led by Christian Furman, who put up 22 points and hit two 3-pointers to continue his excellent season. Coudy started strong, taking a four-point lead into halftime. But the Flying Dutchmen held the Falcons offense to just seven points in the third quarter. The 12-point gap was too much for Coudy to make up, despite a strong fourth period.

It was a tough game too. Each side had a player foul out and both teams combined for 26 free throw attempts.

    Fox 3 2-2 9, Gavazzi 3 0-0 9, Hetrick 3 3-5 9, Thorwart 4 0-1 9, Mitchell 2 4-4 6, Nedinski 2 4-4 6, Bille 2 0-0 4, Coudreit 2 0-0 4, Davis 1 0-0 2, Schutz 0 0-4 0. Totals:

JV: St. Marys 44, Coudy 37
