PORT ALLEGANY — The Kane boys capitalized on Port Allegany’s slow start and never looked back, using opportunistic offense and 3-point shooting to beat the Gators, 46-33, behind a combined 30 points from Andy Jekielek and Landon Darr.
Jekielek scored 17 points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, while Darr poured in 13 points and knocked down three triples, leading the Wolves to a non-conference victory. Kane forced 18 Port turnovers, including six in the Gators’ first seven possessions, before using patient offensive sets to maintain its lead.
“We hung around and kept it within six for awhile, and then down the stretch they were able to pull away,” Port coach Kyle Babcock said. “They were patient toward the end, worked the ball well and were able to go inside and outside and knocked down a few threes.”
Kane jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Port brought the score even by the end of the first quarter. The Wolves out-scored the Gators in each of the final three stanzas, however, as Port was without guard Drew Evens most of the way. Evens took an accidental elbow to the mouth in the second quarter, requiring to leave the game to get stitches.
Braylon Button turned in a big game for the Gators on both ends of the floor, totaling seven points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.
“(Button) played well underneath,” Babcock said. “I don’t think we went to him offensively enough and that’s something we need to work on, getting the ball to our big men down low.”
Blaine Moses added seven points, five rebounds and two steals for Port, while Ty Guilds scored eight points and dished out three assists.
