High School Football Roundup: Bradford loses its final D9 game while Keystone gets back on track

    Karns City 55, Bradford 8

KARNS CITY — Karns City used its power rushing attack to run past a depleted Bradford roster, beating the Owls 55-8.

Injuries, Covid and other illnesses have left Bradford short-handed all season. That had never been more evident than Friday, however, when a roster that was once over 40 Owls strong brought less than 20 available players to KC.

“I’ve never seen anything like it with all these injuries,” Bradford coach Jeff Puglio said. “For how out-matched we were, I think we should be proud of the effort of these kids tonight.”

Karns City used its wing-t approach to move the ball on the Owls.

“They had some really nice backs that gashed us,” Puglio said. “We just couldn’t really plug any holes inside, and they made us pay for it.”

Bradford’s lone TD came on an Elijah Fitton pass to Jerid Wilmoth on an outside corner route. It was Wilmoth’s fifth TD reception of the season.

“I’m proud of all the seniors,” Puglio said. “They just really did a great job.”

The Owls, as they have all season, turned to young players to fill lineup spots.

“We saw some things to build on going into next year,” Puglio said. “The message to the underclassmen is that we’ve got to get to the weight room, got to get stronger. Teams like Karns City win games in January and February, and we need to start paying the price in the offseason.”

Keystone 48, Elk County Catholic 20

KNOX — Keystone made up for last week’s loss with a 48-20 win at home against Elk County Catholic.

Kyle Nellis carried the Panthers, toting the rock 13 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns. His third score, a 40-yard romp broke the game open for Keystone. Nellis even caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bret Wingard. Wingard threw two strikes, the one to Nellis and another to Zander McHenry for 22-yards. Noah Cherry led ECC on the ground with 25 carries for 109 yards and a score.
