Four first-half goals ensured that the Bradford boys soccer team’s senior night would be celebrated with a victory.
The Owls answered an early Kane counter-punch to beat the Wolves, 5-2, Saturday at Parkway Field while honoring the program’s nine graduating seniors.
Lucas Johnson got Bradford on the board in the third minute before Aaron Mishic answered for Kane just three minutes later. Andrew Kane gave the Owls the lead again in the 14th minute before Cam Austin doubled it two minutes after.
A Drage Waterman goal would give Bradford a three-goal halftime lead that it wouldn’t surrender. Calyb Geist scored on a penalty kick for Bradford while Justin Mishic buried a PK for Kane.
“This was the first game we have played in adverse weather conditions,” Bradford coach Wes Lohrman said. “At points, the weather was an impact. The team has been working on its passing in different parts of the field. They did a good job building on that today.”
Kane and Lucas Johnson each picked up an assist for Bradford while Mitchell Strauss handed out two assists. Tristan Dragoone made three saves in goal for the Owls while Kane keeper Owen Hillard made 12 saves.
“(Strauss) continues to find ways to help us score goals and Colin Conneely helped with our combination play,” Lohrman said. “Calyb Geist helped us maintain possession in the middle with his defending and distribution. Kane and Johnson continue to provide numerous options and support on the wings.”
Lohrman felt that some of Bradford’s defensive lapses may have stemmed from comfort, as the Owls played with a lead nearly the entire game.
“Our defense relaxed a little too much after our first goal and gave up a late penalty, but played a strong enough game to help us win,” Lohrman said. “Jaydon Warnick, Cam Austin, Christian Peterson and Andy Mangold are continuing to grow together as a unit.”
Bradford’s nine seniors say goodbye to Parkway Field after four successful years that included a 13-0 regular season in 2020’s altered “bubble” schedule, a 15-6 finish and District 9 title in 2019, and another district title as freshmen in 2018’s 14-7 season.
“The senior recognition game is always tough,” Lohrman said. “For nine of our players, it will be the last time they play at Parkway as an Owl. This group of seniors will be difficult to say goodbye to.
“During their time, they have established themselves and their impact on this program. Their efforts, energy, and motivation have built an environment that is enjoyable to be a part of. I wish them all equal success in their future endeavors.”
