The annual reunion of the Civilian Conservation Corps and a statue dedication will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in front of the Warren County Visitors Center, 22045 U.S. Route 6.
Historian Dr. Michael Schultz will serve as keynote speaker.
Schultz, a longtime historian of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), turns 90 years old the day before this year’s reunion. Schultz is the author or co-author of books dedicated to the history of the CCC, including the legacy of the CCC in rural Pennsylvania.
Schultz worked on the Twin Lakes and Loleta recreational areas in Elk County between 1978 and 1992.
From those years of service, Schultz developed an interest in the CCC that has inspired him to establish the Michael and Marie T. Schultz Collection of CCC Memorabilia, housed at the Hanley Library at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The collection includes more than 1,000 pictures, 50 books and video interviews, as well as camp newspapers and articles written about the CCC.
The CCC was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It provided a place to stay and three meals a day to men age 18 to 25 who signed up, also allowing them to earn a wage while improving the nation’s public lands and forests.
