PORT ALLEGANY — The Port Allegany High School Awards Assembly for 2021 was held May 28 at the school. Master of Ceremonies for the event was high school principal, Marc Budd.
Underclassman Awards were first on the program with Certificates of Excellence for attaining Honor Roll Status during each grading period of the school year. For Grade 7 – Kailey Bartlett, Alivia Dowell, Micha Emerick, Madison Errick, Tristan Kiser, Lily Lehmier and Kendra Meade; for Grade 8 – Bryce Ableidinger, Jacob Causer, Ava Coleman, Tyler Fillhart, Levi Howard, Raelin Meacham, Derek Smith, Isabell VanNette and Joshua Veilleux; for Grade 9 – Isaac Barber, Braylon Button, Alana Corey, Amber Funk, Henry Kisler, Brayden Pearsall and Julia Postlewait; for Grade 10 – Noah Archer, Brielle Budd, Isaac Fessenden, Christopher Herbert, Blaine Moses, Bryce Skinner, Mikya Stake, Camerynn Stambaugh and Evin Stauffer; and for Grade 11 – Ryan Bowser, Isaiah DeBockler, Ian Dynda, Bryn Easton, Daniel Finn, Ty Guilds, Dylan Haskins, Amber Hurd, Aleczander Kiser, Madison Kottwitz, Patrick Kujawski, Sapphire Nichols, Alliyah Penick, Syrus Sauers and Rylie Simpson.
Certificates of Superior Achievement for attaining High Honor Roll status during each grading period of the school year went to Aiden Bliss, Madison Fillhart, Owen Kisler, Alexander Schott and Nicholas Wilfong in Grade 7; Tyler Carinci, Saige Causer, Aidan Clark, Grace Finn, Lily Madison, Ella Moses, Joy Ou, Willow Sauers and Juuso Young in Grade 8; Saxon Palmer, Peyton Stiles, Levi Wilfong and Miska Young in Grade 9; Drew Evens, Stanley Fox, Shane Lawton, Sierria Peters, Thea Petruzzi, Olivia Schott, Madeline Smith and Madelynn Triplett in Grade 10; and River Cramer, Sawyer Prince and Abrianna Dowell in Grade 11.
Accelerated Reader Awards went to Kendra Meade in 7th Grade; Grace Finn in 8th Grade; Levi Wilfong in 9th grade; Seth Benson in 10th Grade and Madison Kottwitz in 11th Grade.
The 7th Grade Geography Award went to Alex Schott. The Student Handbook Cover Design Award went to Kira Bonawtiz.
The Biology Award, went to Levi Wilfong. The Bonnie Scholar Awards from St. Bonaventure went to Daniel Finn, Reagan Hutton, Madison Kottwitz and Sapphire Nichols. The Science Award/Bausch & Lomb Award goes to an 11th Grade student. The award is a medal and opportunity to compete for a University of Rochester Scholarship. Sapphire Nichols was the recipient of this award. The Frederick Douglas & Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences from the University of Rochester went to Ian Dynda.
The Outdoor Sportsman’s Awards went to Taro Tanaka, Az Luk, Kai Stauffer, Payton Spencer and Ian Dynda. These awards were presented by George Riley.
Budd noted that the National Yearbook Program of Excellence was awarded to the 2021 Yearbook Staff and their advisor, Mary Filjones.
The Student Council Officer Awards were presented as follows by advisor, Laura Strawderman. Taro Tanaka – President; Dalton Distrola – Vice-President; Marah Rush – Secretary; Destiny Grabowski – Treasurer; Mallory Causer – Class Representative and Sydney Davenport, Class Representative.
Penny Amacher presented the Peer Helper Awards to Mallory Causer President; Caden Roys, Vice-President; Gracie Archer – Secretary; and Abbye McKeirnan and Ethan Sprankle Treasurers.
Senior Awards began with National Honor Society awards presented by Loren Ferguson, advisor. Certificates of Excellence for attaining Honor Roll status for each grading period of the school year were presented to Gracie Archer, Drew Benson, Kira Bonawitz Isaiah Caden, Kaci Chappell, Shannon Curfman, Jade Evens, Bree Garzell, Destiny Grabowski, Richard Phillips, Marah Rush, Taro Tanaka, Sierra Wiley and Danielle Witham.

Certificates of Distinguished Excellence for attaining Honor Roll status during each marking period for six years of school went to Gracie Archer, Mallory Causer, Shannon Curfman, Jade Evens, Bree Garzel, Marah Rush, Morgan Witherell and Taro Tanaka.
A Superior Academic Achievement Award for attaining High Honor Roll status every marking period for six years of school went to Caden Roys.
The Senior Accelerated Reader Senior Award was presented by Matt Lawton to Morgan Dowell.
Mrs. Hutton presented the Art Award to Kira Bonawitz.
Cole Ramsey presented Music Awards to the following: Louis Armstrong Jazz Award went to Mallory Causer; John Philip Sousa Award went to Blake Price; Sierra Wiley received both the Senior Band Award and the Band Front Award; the National School Choral Award was presented to Mallory Causer, the Senior Chorus Award went to Dalton Distrola and Bree Garzel; the Fred Waring/Director’s Award for Chorus went to Blake Price.
Penny Amacher presented the Senior Drama Awards to Mallory Causer and Blake Price.
Varsity Club Plaques for earning eight letters during grades 9 – 12 were presented to Gracie Archer, Trey Ayers, Daton Distrola, Bree Garzel, Derek Kallenborn, Justin Young and Taro Tanaka by George Riley.
Riley also presented the Varsity Club Scholarship of $500 (each) to Taro Tanaka and Mallory Causer.
Aaron Clark presented the Bob Davies-Lou Foy Student Athlete Awards to Mallory Causer and Caden Roys. He also announced the David Lacher Memorial Award/Female Athlete of the Year went to Bree Garzel and the Thomas Taylor Memorial Award Male Athlete of the Year to Taro Tanaka.
The United States Marine Corps Awards were presented by Vince Berrettini to Gracie Archer and Dalton Distrola – Distinguished Athlete Awards; to Caden Roys – Scholastic Excellence Award; and to Mallory Causer, Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence. Also presented by Mr. Berrettini were the United States Air Force awards to Mallory Causer and Caden Roys, Math & Science Award; and to Bree Garzel and Taro Tanaka, the Scholar Athlete Awards.
Awards given to seniors enrolled in the College Preparatory Course included the English award of $200 presented by Matt Lawton, sponsored by Ardagh and awarded to Morgan Witherell; Science Award of $200 presented by Wally Finn, sponsored by the Rotary Club and awarded to Caden Roys; the Mathematics Award of $200, was presented by Christian Sevinsky, sponsored by the Rotary Club and awarded to Caden Roys; the Social Studies Award of $200, also sponsored by the Rotary Club was presented by George Riley to Caden Roys.
The Spanish Award of $200, sponsored by Ardagh was presented by Lynn Newcomer and awarded to Allison Stepp; the French Award of $200, also sponsored by Ardagh, was awarded to Mallory Causer by Sara Bishel.
Vince Berrettini presented the Technology Education Award sponsored by Citizens & Northern Bank to Dalton Distrola; the Elizabeth Losey Memorial Award of $950 went to Marah Rush, presented by Loren Ferguson; The Gerald Stayer Memorial Scholarship of $500 was presented by Marc Budd to Taro Tanaka and Derek Kallenborn.
The Jean Marie Swanson Scholarship was presented to Mallory Causer and Taro Tanaka in the amount of $12,695 each with George Riley doing the honors. Aaron Clark presented the John Thrash Memorial Scholarship to Drew Benson; Loren Ferguson presented Shannon Curfman with the Leo Coleman Award. George Riley presented the Lloyd Eastman Memorial Award of $500 to Mallory Causer and Blake Price. The Patricia Lloyd Memorial Award of $200 sponsored by the Lions Club was presented by George Riley to Marah Rush. The Senior Pastor Randy Headley Memorial Awards for Community Service Awards of $500 each were given to Mallory Causer, Kira Bonawitz and Sierra Wiley. The underclassmen Pastor Randy Headley Memorial Awards for Community Service went to Juniors Daniel Finn, Maycie Howard and Josh Kessler in the amount of $300; to Sophomores Makayla Alcorn, Kaelyn Bonawitz, Thea Petruzzi and Mikya Stake; and eighth graders Grace Finn and Levi Howard; all in the amount of $100.
Vince Berrettini then presented the Paul Maynard Scholarship of Courage to Bree Garzel and the Roxy Taylor Volunteer Scholarship to Marah Rush. Both awards were sponsored by the Port Allegany Veterans Memorial, Inc. and were in the amount of $1,000.
The Raymond Charles Varney award was presented to Shannon Curfman and was presented by Loren Ferguson.
Christian Sevinsky presented the Lt. William E. Daisley Mathematics Award of $200 to Caden Roys.
The Robert J. Edgreen Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 for four years was presented by Loren Ferguson to Caden Roys.
