Bradford man pleads guilty to fleeing police, drug charges

SMETHPORT — A Bradford man pleaded guilty Thursday in McKean County Court to charges in three cases, including drug charges and allegations from police.

Darryl M. Sherlock, 34, entered a guilty plea in one case to a charge of flight to avoid apprehension, in a second to a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and a summary charge, and in a third to charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, possession of a controlled substance and a summary charge.

According to District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer, on July 10, 2020, Sherlock possessed a glass pipe and drove when his operating privileges were suspended, revoked or cancelled. On Sept. 26, 2020, he concealed himself with the intent to avoid trial, apprehension or punishment for a misdemeanor crime. On Oct. 11, 2020, he refused to bring his vehicle to a stop when a Bradford City police officer tried to pull him over and led police on a high speed chase that crossed state lines; he possessed methamphetamine that day, too.

Sherlock will be sentenced June 25.

    Also in court,

Shawn P. Prentiss Jr., 25, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to charges in two cases: in one case, to a charge of simple assault, and in the other to charges of endangering the welfare of children and simple assault. On April 27, 2020, Prentiss tried to put two adults in fear of injury by following too closely a vehicle that held two adults and two children under age 6; at one point, he got in front of the vehicle and slammed his brakes, and he tried to get the other vehicle to pull over, said Shaffer. Then, on May 1, Prentiss grabbed his girlfriend by the torso area, leaving bruises on her ribs, according to Shaffer. Prentiss will be sentenced July 8.

Jeffrey P. Carney, 50, of Hazel Hurst, pleaded guilty to charges in two cases related to his behavior in the McKean County Jail.

In one case, he entered a guilty plea to a charge of simple assault, and in the other to a charge of criminal mischief. Shaffer said that on Jan. 13, 2020, at the jail, Carney hurt two corrections officers, causing a back injury to one of them. Then, on Dec. 28, 2020, he punched the window in a door at the jail, shattering it and causing a loss of $726.38. He will be sentenced June 25.

Carney has asked that a third case against him — an assault case — be listed for trial.

Kaylee E. Welch, 22, of Smethport, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft by deception. According to Senior Deputy Attorney General L. Todd Goodwin, on Feb. 29, 2020, Welch was in a collision with her 2013 Ford Escape. The crash caused $7,961.35 in damage to her vehicle, and she had no insurance. On March 2, she got an insurance policy from Progressive and filed a claim asserting that the accident happened on March 5. Welch will be sentenced June 25.

Lois A. Snyder, 60, of Bradford, was entered into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition Program for DUI-alcohol.
