HS Baseball and Softball Roundup: Bradford ends losing skid; Coudy softball walks off OV

GALETON — A five-run fourth inning aided Cam Austin’s six-plus inning pitching performance, as the Bradford baseball team beat Galeton, 6-5, on Monday.

Austin struck out five batters while allowing three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. Galeton plated three runs on Austin in the bottom of the third before the Owls picked the right-hander up a half-inning later.

“(Austin) gave us a great outing again and the pitch count caught up to him,” Bradford coach Eric Haynoski said.

When Austin reached the state-mandated 100-pitch threshold with one out and two runners on in the seventh, Haynoski brought on Calvin Minich to close the game.

Minich struck out the first batter he faced, then forced Patrick Lehman, who had hit a three-run home run earlier in the game, to ground out.

Ashton Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Owls.

“(Smith) is seeing the ball really well this year and he came in and got a big hit for us, which helped spark our five-run inning,” Haynoski said.

Jack Wells added a two-run double later in that inning.

“(Wells) came through with a big two-strike double,” Haynoski said. “It was nice to see him driving the ball like he was doing earlier in the year.”

Bradford’s win snapped a six-game losing streak, as the Owls improved to 5-10.

SMETHPORT — Despite a four-run fifth inning, Smethport (5-7) fell to Elk County Catholic.

Isaac Dellaquila led ECC’s offense with two hits, two runs, an RBI and a walk, while David Anderson drove in two runs for the Crusaders.

Joe Tettis struck out eight Hubbers over six strong innings on the mound for ECC, and only one of the five runs he allowed was earned. Tommy Slay shut the door on Smethport in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the side to diminish any hopes of a Hubber rally.

Smethport starter Noah Lent countered with seven strikeouts over 4.1 innings, and although he allowed six runs, only three were earned. The teams combined for seven errors, as Smethport committed three while ECC was guilty of four.

Alex Ognen roped a two-run double for the Hubbers, while Lent and Noah Watson each had a hit and drove in a run.

    NORTHERN ALLEGHENY

    Otto-Eldred 14, Coudersport 4, 5 innings

ELDRED — Four days ago, Otto-Eldred (8-4) lost to Coudersport (10-2) after falling victim to a six-run inning.

The Terrors avenged that loss on Monday with an eight-run first inning, however, capitalizing on Coudy mistakes to sprint past the Falcons.

“It was great for us to rebound after losing to them 6-5 on Friday,” O-E coach Lance Baker said.

Three walks, two hits, two errors and a hit by pitch fueled O-E’s big inning. Ryan Love and Cole Sebastian each drew a walk to start the rally before Jake Merry reached base on an infield error, starting the merry-go-round on the basepaths for the Terrors.

T.J. VanScoter and Andrew Schenfield each had RBI singles in the first. The duo then combined to extend O-E’s lead in the second with an RBI single from VanScoter and an RBI double by Schenfield.

Merry’s three-run home run in the third inning started a four-run spot for the Terrors and put the game out of reach.

VanScoter finished with three hits and two runs batted in, while Brendan Magee went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Josh Rhinehart added two hits and two RBI for O-E.

Garrett Kellert went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Coudy.

With two games remaining on its schedule, O-E can clinch a share of the Northern Allegheny League title with wins over Oswayo Valley and Cameron County.

    SOFTBALL

    NORTHERN ALLEGHENY

    Coudersport 10, Oswayo Valley 9

COUDERSPORT — A seventh inning that saw seven total runs ended when Mackenzie Gentzyel hit a walk-off single to send Coudersport (8-8) past Oswayo Valley (9-4).

The score looked much different entering in the bottom of the sixth, when the Lady Falcons scored three runs to tie the game at six.

OV responded with three runs of its own in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single by Hannah Winseck.

After a Sierra Myers single, Rosalyn Page doubled her home. Page reached third on an infield error, then took off for home during Ava Wahlers’ at-bat, starting a hectic sequence that tied the game.

Page stole home, then after an infield error on the play, Madyson Dubots-Angood scored, as well, to tie the game.

Wahlers followed with a single, sending Savannah Myers, who walked, to second. Kaylee VanWhy singled, as well, setting up Gentzyel with the bases loaded.

Wahlers, Sierra Myers and Savannah Myers each finished with two hits for the Lady Falcons, while VanWhy had two hits, two walks and scored a run.

Mackenzie George recorded two hits, two walks, two runs and two runs batted in for OV. Brooke George added a hit and drove in three runs, while Makenzie Mesler drew two walks and scored a run.

    NON-LEAGUE

Elk County Catholic 15, Smethport 0

SMETHPORT — Elk County Catholic used a 10-run seventh inning to solidify its victory over Smethport Monday.

Lydia Anderson led ECC’s offense by going 3-for-4 with a game-high five RBI, while Caitlyn Vollmer recorded two hits and three RBI. Lucy Klawuhn also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Dani Nelson recorded both of Smethport’s hits as Emily Mourer pitched a complete game for ECC, recording 15 strikeouts and just three walks.

Celeste Baker pitched all seven innings for the Lady Hubbers (2-13), allowing 13 earned runs on 15 hits and 10 walks with two strikeouts.
