DUBOIS — Seniors Devin Benson and Gavin Piscitelli ended their high school tennis careers on Monday, making a deep run in the doubles district tournament Monday in DuBois.
They made quick work of Clearfield’s Norman and Evilsizor, winning 10-1.
In their second match of the day, Benson/Piscitelli faced Elk County Catholic’s No. 1 doubles team of Anthony Messineo and Jack Bauer in a 10-game pro-set. After dropping the first game, Bradford and ECC traded games until the score was 4-4. Bradford then won the next two games before ECC won another game, making it 7-5. Benson and Piscitelli won the final three games to reach the semifinals.
After a 40-minute break, the semifinals started with Bradford taking on the top seed in Braxton Sherry/Ben Gigliotti from Punxsutawney in a best two out of three sets. Bradford won the first game, but Punxsy showed its strength, winning the next six games in a row. The second set consisted of Punxsy winning the first two games and gaining complete control. The next two games were split, making the score 4-1. Benson and Piscitelli were not ready to quit and roared back to win the second set, 6-4.
After the final set was tied at 2-2, Punxsy showed their strength again and closed out the match, winning 6-2 in the final set. Punxsy went on to win the finals.
“I am really going to miss both Gavin and Devin,” Bradford coach Doug Atteberry said. “They were both leaders of this team and led by example. They never quit today, even when they were down 4-1 in the second set, they kept playing. Punxsy even had five match points before putting them away. I am sure they are going to be successful young men and I look forward to hearing from them in the future.”
Bradford’s second doubles team of freshman Ward Kennedy and sophomore Max Shaw lost 10-0 to Brockway’s Painter/Marchiori.
“Although it was a tough day for Kennedy and Shaw, they gained valuable experience that they can draw from in the future,” Atteberry said.
