A 10-strikeout night on the mound for Alex Vollmer and four-run seventh led the way for a 6-1 St. Marys win over Bradford on the Owls’ senior night.
The Dutchmen got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single from Garret Bauer. They added another run in the sixth with a RBI double by Tony Lewis, who led the team with two RBI.
Cam Austin was sharp for the Owls in his 5.1 innings on the mound before reaching the pitch count (100). Austin allowed two earned runs on seven hits and three walks to go with seven strikeouts.
“Cam Austin did a great job on the mound,” Bradford coach Eric Haynoski said. “Unfortunately, the pitch count caught up to him.”
Bradford had five hits during the game but couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving six runners on base.
Dalton Dixon got a hit as well as the team’s three seniors in Levi Reed, Austen Davis and Jeff Thacker. Thacker led the Owls (4-7) with two hits and Reed’s hit was an RBI single that scored Austin in the sixth.
“All three seniors came through with hits,” Haynoski said. “They’ve been a great asset to the team all year long. We’re really going to rely on them in the next couple weeks.”
St. Marys then extended its lead to six runs with a four-run seventh that saw a pair of RBI singles and two bases-loaded walks.
The two teams will meet again tonight in St. Marys. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
