PUNXSUTAWNEY — After falling behind early in the meet, doubt over his team’s energy level entered Bradford boys track head coach Tom Tessena’s head.
After all, two days before the Owls’ Monday-night meet at Punxsutawney, Bradford had competed again on Saturday. The two-day rest period, Tessena said, was something the Owls “never do.”
Led by a trio of jumping performances by senior Gavin McGee, however, the Owls stormed back to beat Punxsutawney, 87-63, and cap a perfect regular season (13-0).
Punxsy started the meet by winning the 3200-meter relay, the first time that the Owls had been beaten in that event this season. The Chucks then won two throwing events, giving them a 17-6 lead.
Bradford rallied back with strong performances in the short-distance events, sweeping the top three places in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes while taking first and second in the 400-meter dash.
Gabe Mitchell won the 100-meters and 200-meters, and took second in the 400-meters behind teammate and fellow-senior Steve Morgan.
Mitchell also won the 400-meter relay alongside Jake Pattison, Andrew Kane and Jerid Wilmoth, while Morgan ran in the 1600-meter relay with Pattison, Wilmoth and freshman Ian Pilon.
“I was concerned because of the meet on Saturday, so no rest, and thought that was going to hurt us in the beginning,” Tessena said. “But the guys mustered the strength to get the job done.”
McGee not only out-jumped the Chucks, but nearly out-jumped the Bradford record book, as his 45-foot, 10-inch triple jump was the second-longest in Owls history (a foot behind the record of 46-10). He won the long jump with a 21-foot, eight-inch effort, good for fifth-longest in Bradford history and six inches off the school record.
McGee completed his sweep of the jumps by winning the high jump with a 5-8.
Ryan Cottillion won the 800-meter run for the Owls and finished second in the high jump, while Parker Shipman won the discus and Alex Liners finished second in both hurdle events.
“It was really a good win,” Tessena said. “All of those guys really made some contributions. With all of the quarantines and having low numbers, the undefeated finish was really a shock.”
Led by a flurry of wins from Abbigail Schleicher, the Bradford girls improved to 6-1 on the season by beating Punxsutawney.
Schleicher won the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dashes while also running on Bradford’s victorious 1600-meter relay team alongside Emily Bosworth, Hannah Lary and Emma Swanson.
Swanson, Bosworth and Lary each ran the 3200-meter relay alongside Marissa Miller, who also ran the 1600-meter relay, and Swanson ran the 400-meter relay, as well, for a sweep of the three team races.
Swanson added a win in the 300-meter hurdles, while Bosworth won the 800-meter run.
“Our sprinters and hurdles have come a long way as the season has come along,” Bradford girls coach Larry Stillman said. “We looked good in every area tonight, though, quite honestly.”
Abbie Nuzzo turned in a double-win for Bradford by taking the pole vault and triple jump, while Kelcie Little won the 100-meter hurdles and assisted on the 1600-meter relay.
Sophia Asp (discus), Korie Dixon (3200), Jessica Fox (long jump) and Kayelyn Eschrich (high jump) each added an individual win for Bradford.
“We looked good,” Stillman said. “Now, we have until next Wednesday to try to put together our best lineup for the district tournament.”
