A Bradford man escaped serious injury when his sport-utility vehicle was struck by a train on Hilton Street around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Devin Grice, 39, of Chelsea Lane, was traveling south on Hilton Street when the SUV failed to stop at the railroad crossing and traveled onto the tracks in front of a southbound Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad train.

The train struck the passenger side of the SUV, and pushed it off the tracks.

Bradford City Police said Grice had minor injuries but refused medical treatment. The SUV had disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

The train’s emergency stopping mechanism had locked up, but none of the rail cars left the track due to the accident. The train blocked North Kendall Avenue and Mill Street for about an hour while a repair was made and the tracks were inspected for potential damage.

The train was traveling through Bradford, and was not traveling to or from American Refining Group. In fact, the slow maneuvering train that serves ARG was on the other set of tracks at the same time, and may have blocked Grice’s view of the second train, according to bystanders.

Police said no charges were filed in the incident.
