S.W. Smith library plans Star Wars Reads Day, Building Fund 5K

PORT ALLEGANY — There’s a lot happening S.W. Smith Memorial Public Library in Port Allegany.

On June 12, the library will host Star Wars Reads Day and the Building Fund 5K, Fun Walk and Kids Fun Run. Visitors are invited to come for one or both events. Activities are scheduled for 2 to 6:30 p.m.

Highlights include a visit from Starkiller Garrison members, a 5K run or fun walk, visits from community agencies, live music and food.

The afternoon will begin with Star Wars Reads Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Starkiller Garrison is a group of volunteers in Western Pennsylvania who do costumed charity work and who promote an interest in Star Wars. Learn more at starkillergarrison.com.

Other attendees are invited to dress in Star Wars gear if they wish and will have a chance to interact with members of the Starkiller Garrison and take free photos with the Starkiller Garrison in the Starship photo booth. There will be free Star Wars books and activities for children, while supplies last, along with free food and drinks.

Bradford musician Jim Ronan will perform, too.

Attendees will be able to visit with the library’s community partners, including Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services of McKean County, CARE for Children, the Children’s Advocacy Center of McKean County, Northern Pennsylvania Regional College, Northern Tier Community Action Head Start and the United Way of Bradford Area Inc.

The Building Fund 5K Run, Fun Walk, and Kids Fun Run will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. June 12.

Participants are invited to “Run, walk, bike, scoot, or skate to raise money for the library’s Building Fund!”

The Kids Fun Run for the Library will happen at 4:30 p.m. For the run, children will run around the library grounds three times. They will not be in the street.

The cost for children to participate is $5 per child. People can pre-register, or they can register from 3:30 to 4 p.m. on June 12.

Then, the Building Fund 5K Run or Fun Walk will happen from 5 to 6 p.m., starting and ending at the library. This is the pre-registration cost for people who register before May 28: adults age 21 and up, $25 (guarantees T-shirt); students age 6-20, $15 (guarantees T-shirt); and children age 5 or under can participate for free, but they will not get a T-shirt.

After May 28, registrants will pay an additional $5 on top of the above costs. On June 12, registration for the 5K Run and Fun Walk will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Pre-registration forms are available in the library or via Google Forms registration at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfw0VqFFwqWfhqs6__k7CMMMfjtbJ1y6nEbZqZrp_5-qXDlkw/viewform

Pay in the library with cash or a check. Google Form registrants can give electronic payment via Network for Good.

Appropriate masks and social distancing are required inside the library.
