HS Baseball and Softball Roundup: Coudy, Jburg rally for victories; O-E softball routs Coudy

DUKE CENTER — Johnsonburg overcame a 3-0 deficit by plating 12 total runs within the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 12-3 road win over Otto-Eldred.

The loss was O-E’s first of the season.

Cole Sebastian got the Terrors (3-1) on the board first with a two-run homer in the first inning. O-E then took a 3-0 lead after Max Splain scored on an error by Jburg in the second inning.

The Rams’ (9-0) rally began in the fifth when Luke Zimmerman cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field, tying the game at 3-3. Then in the sixth, Domenic Allegretto, Dalton Stahli, Caden Smiley, Ethan Wells and Aiden Zimmerman (2 RBI) each recorded an RBI during Jburg’s nine-run inning that gave the Rams a commanding nine-run lead.

Along with his game-high three RBI, Luke Zimmerman struck out a game-high 12 O-E batters and walked just one. Gabe Watts relieved Zimmerman on the mound in the seventh and tossed a shutout inning to seal the Jburg victory. Watts struck out three straight which would’ve ended the game, but a passed ball on the third continued the inning. Watts earned his fourth strikeout after that.

For O-E, Jake Merry recorded five strikeouts on the mound, walked two and allowed seven runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings of work.

“We played even with one of the best 2A schools in the district for 5.1 (innings), but three errors in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie and the wheels came off after that,” O-E coach Lance Baker said. “Cole’s homerun in the first gave us a huge early lift and Jake did an outstanding job keeping their lineup off balance. I commend him for his outing (Saturday).”

COUDERSPORT — Trailing 5-2 going into the fifth, Coudersport rallied with an eight-run fifth inning to earn a comeback win over St. Marys.

The Dutchmen (3-5) plated three runs in the first inning thanks to a two-run RBI single from Conner Straub, who later scored on a Coudy error.

Coudy’s eight-run fifth inning got started when back-to-back bases-loaded walks scored a pair of runs for the Falcons, cutting their deficit to a single run. Owen Deutschlander then tied the game with an RBI single, which was followed by an RBI from Garrett Kellert, a two-run RBI double by Derek Easton and a two-run RBI single from Jackson Glover, giving Coudy a 10-5 lead.

St. Marys battled back with a three-run sixth to cut the Coudy lead down to two runs, but the Falcons (6-0) added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning on their way to sealing the win.

Glover led Coudy with three RBI, followed by A.J. Redmond and Easton, who each had two. Five other Coudy players recorded an RBI. Redmond, Easton and Glover combined to toss eight strikeouts on the mound while allowing eight walks, six hits and three earned runs.

Straub finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Dutchmen, while Charlie Coudriet, Conner Bressler and Tony Lewis combined to give up seven hits, seven earned runs and 12 walks to go along with four strikeouts on the mound.
