HS Track and Field: Bradford sweeps St. Marys; Lady Raiders beat Coudy for 1st time in over a decade

ST. MARYS — Despite only having 11 runners available, the Bradford boys track team used a late win in the 1600-meter relay race to edge St. Marys on Tuesday night.

The meet came down to its last race before Alex Liners, Ian Pilon, Gabe Mitchell and Steve Morgan combined for a 3:48.7 run that gave the Owls the final team points they needed to beat the Flying Dutchmen.

“When the meet came down to the final event of the day, our guys really got excited,” Bradford coach Tom Tessena said. “All four guys had done at least three events, and three (Mitchell, Morgan and Liners) did four.”

Pilon, a freshman, also won the 800 and 1600-meter runs for the Owls, while Mitchell won the 200-meter sprint and Morgan won the 400-meter dash. Liners came away with three wins, taking the 110-meter hurdles, 300- meter hurdles and shot put.

Gavin McGee was a triple-winner for Bradford, as well, as he swept the long jump, high jump and triple jump.

“I can’t say enough about how proud I was of all these guys for their efforts today,” Tessena said. “I hope all the guys we are getting back next week can get some of this enthusiasm.”

Tessena expects more athletes to return later in the week after completing quarantine and noted that although his team has “a lot of time” to get ready for the district playoffs, the Owls will need to improve.

Quadruple-winner Abby Nuzzo led the Bradford girls to victory, as she won the triple jump, long jump, pole vault and javelin.

“(Nuzzo) has looked very good in practice and she had an outstanding day today,” Bradford coach Larry Stillman said.

Samantha Hayes won three events of her own for St. Mary’s, as she took home the 200, 800 and 1600-meter events while assisting in the Lady Dutch’s winning 1600-meter relay team.

Marissa Miller won the 400-meter dash for Bradford while assisting on the Lady Owls’ victorious 3200-meter relay team, and Alexia Corignani won the 100-meter hurdles while assisting on the winning 400-meter relay team.

“All three of our relays looked very good,” Stillman said. “We are happy with the results but equally as important was being able to have a track meet and to get back to competing again.”
