Winter was not kind to the Ridgway Skate Park, which opened in May 2019. The asphalt surfaces and special, eco-friendly and skater friendly surfacing materials, are both in need of an upgrade before the park can open for the 2021 skate season.
The ramps in the park are covered in Skatelite, a durable paper composite that is environmentally friendly technology which originated in the Aerospace industry. The material is made in the state of Washington here in the US and is both fire and weather resistant.
It offers a softer landing for skaters and makes “ramp rash” less likely.
However, harsh winter weather and time has led to a need for resealing both the asphalt and the Skatelite surfaces.
For those who want to help, donations are being accepted by contacting local resident and park advocate Gary Gerber through the Ridgway Recreational Association Facebook page, by calling 814-335-4027 or by mail at Gerber’s address: 524 Montmorenci Road, Ridgway 15853.
Gerber was one of the individuals who volunteered their time to bring the Skate Park to life after four years without one in the community.
The Skate Park’s location in downtown RIdgway and proximity to the basketball court and pool makes it a great place for youth to spend time enjoyably. A little touch up will have it ready for use in no time, but as the park is maintained solely through volunteer labor and donations, help is needed to provide that TLC.
