Bradford City Council has received six letters of interest for the vacancy created by the recent passing of Dan Palmer.
Council members had asked for letters from Bradford City residents interested in filling the remainder of Palmer’s term, which would be through Jan. 2, 2024. Tuesday was the deadline for accepting letters.
On Wednesday, Mayor James McDonald explained council members “received six letters of interest from candidates that expressed interest in filling the late Dan Palmer’s council seat for the remainder of that term.”
He explained, “By law, council only has 30 days to fill the vacancy before the matter goes before a judge and the vacancy gets filled by someone that he chooses. I fully expect that city council will make a decision on a replacement before the next city council meeting.”
Currently serving on council are Brad Mangel, Terry Lopus and Tim Pecora, as well as the mayor. All three of their seats are up for election in the May primary.
Mangel is not seeking re-election, while Lopus and Pecora are.
The last time a current council member passed away in office was in 2012, when retired teacher Rick Benton died. Council accepted letters of interest for the position, and named Mangel to council.
Pecora has been on council since 2014, Lopus since 2017 and McDonald since 2020. Palmer had been on council since 2016.
