Winter is often synonymous with warm blankets, hot cocoa and a warm fire, though it can also be an extremely hard time, especially for less fortunate individuals who may not have adequate housing or income during the long, cold months. Luckily, many churches and other organizations often step in to provide assistance to those in need.
For example, the Kane United Methodist Church recently provided a “warming station” for the first time this year, from 6 until 9 p.m. Feb. 12th until Feb. 15th. During those evenings, hot beverages and soup were available. During these times, volunteers were available to connect individuals with other area agencies for those who may need help with overnight lodging or other services.
A representative from the church said that they will continue the service when it’s below 15 degrees actual or wind chill.
“We work with the YWCA in Bradford to get housing for those in need,” said the representative. “We asked for volunteers to be available these nights.”
An additional service offered at the church includes a drive-up/delivery meal each Wednesday. This week’s menu is tuna noodle casserole, peas and banana bread. The meal is free, though donations are accepted. Volunteers will deliver in the Kane area; volunteers are currently needed to help with deliveries and in the kitchen.
The “sharing room” is also open from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoons. Items that may be available are personal hygiene items, dish soap, laundry soap, toilet paper, garbage bags, etc. Lastly, there is a warming line with winter items such as hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks for those who need them.
Anyone who has questions is asked to call the church at 814-837-7120.
David Livingston, executive director for Destinations Bradford said that they also just installed a “coffee corner” in their foyer that has free hot coffee, cocoa and tea for anyone that needs to stop in and warm up during operating hours.
