Bradford Native Jason Paul recently announced that he won the 2020 BIBA (Best Indie Book Award) for his book Lightning Bug Lights.

The book, written by Paul and illustrated by Stefan Motmans (aka “STEMOS”) was awarded for the category of best children’s book for ages 2-8.

The story is centered around the bond between a father and his daughter. Readers go on a magical journey, balancing a child’s reality with their imagination.

“This story is beautiful, the illustrations are magical; Lightning Bugs Lights will not only light up the hearts of its readers, but it will also light up their imaginations,” read the review on the BIBA website.

Published in 2019, the book previously received a 2019 BIBA award for best illustrations in a children’s book, ages 2-8.

After publishing Lightning Bug Lights in 2019, Paul said he received feedback from BIBA on ways to improve his writing for the future as a new author.

“They explained that there’s a certain criteria or structure that needs to be followed,” he said.

For months, Paul got up at 4 a.m., brainstorming on how to make the book better and how to tell a better story. For days, he stared at a blank computer screen until he finally completed the second edition of the book. In total, it took around 18 months to complete.

He learned his hard work paid off after being notified of his second BIBA award.

Paul explained that this journey would not have been possible without the support of the Bradford community.

“You have to give to receive, and so many people have supported me during this journey,” he said, ending the interview with his catchphrase, “there’s something magical about reading.”

When discussing what is in store for the future, Paul said he is currently working on the second book in the series and recently landed a significant role in the mini-series “Washington’s Armor,” filmed at Capernaum Studios in Poolville, Texas.
