A Port Allegany man is in McKean County Jail after allegedly showing up at a Port Allegany home twice in October, the first time preventing a woman from leaving and the second time breaking in and trying to hurt her.

Steven D. Hartzell II, 40, of 3422 Route 155, Port Allegany, was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge William Todd on charges of burglary, a first-degree felony; two counts of criminal trespass, a second-degree felony and a third-degree felony; simple assault, a third-degree misdemeanor; and summary counts of harassment and disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, at 3:09 a.m. Oct. 20, Lewis Run-based state police were dispatched to Broad Street, Port Allegany, for a report of a burglary in progress. There, police talked to the two alleged victims, a woman and a male.

They related to police that on Oct. 18, Hartzell went to the Broad Street home, took the woman’s phone and would not let her leave the residence, the complaint alleged. He did not leave until around 3 p.m. Oct. 19.

Then, around 3 a.m. Oct. 20, the woman and male victims were on her back porch, when Hartzell arrived and began to yell at them. The woman told Hartzell multiple times to leave, and Hartzell tried to punch the male, according to court records.

The male left the scene and called 911, while the woman went inside and locked all the doors. Hartzell used a credit card to bypass a lock and gain entry, the complaint stated.

Inside, Hartzell continued to yell and tried to physically harm the woman, court records stated. The woman was able to get away and call police, and Hartzell left when he realized the police were coming.

Hartzell is in jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 11.
