A New Hampshire woman accused in a motor vehicle accident that injured two children was one of several people who had preliminary hearings scheduled Wednesday before District Judge Richard Luther.
Heidi S. Mays, 26, of Lebanon, N.H., waived a preliminary hearing before Luther on accidents involving death or personal injury and two counts of endangering the welfare of children, first-degree misdemeanors; two counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of accidents involved death or injury while not licensed, second-degree misdemeanors; marijuana-small amount for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors; accident involving damage to attended vehicle/property, a third-degree misdemeanor; and 10 summary charges.
According to the complaint, at 7:03 p.m. Sept. 29, Lewis Run-based state police received a report of a motor vehicle crash with possible injuries, entrapment and fire near 2669 W. Washington St., Corydon Township. A trooper arrived on scene to find a minivan with New York registration that was off the northbound side of the road with smoke emanating from the front portion. No one was in the minivan or on scene.
Police learned from talking to witnesses that Mays had been driving with a 7-year-old boy and 9-year-old boy as passengers, and the van belonged to someone who was staying at the Willow Bay Campground.
Police searched for Mays and the boys throughout the night and received information about 8:30 a.m. Sept. 30 that Mays was staying at 295 South Ave., Bradford, which is where police found her and the two boys, court records stated.
Mays admitted that she was in a crash, but she told police that she blacked out prior to the crash and did not remember anything until after the crash, the complaint stated. She walked to The Willows and found a stranger for assistance.
According to the complaint, both boys were injured in the crash: the 7-year-old reported having a sore neck, minor headache and seatbelt bruise on his shoulder, and the 9-year-old reported a chipped tooth. Mays had not sought medical care for them.
Court records indicated that Mays had inhaled aerosol cans about one hour before the crash and fell asleep behind the wheel of the van while it was in motion.
Bail for Mays is set at 10% of $15,000.
Also appearing before Luther were Christopher S. Mangione, 45, of Bradford, who waived a preliminary hearing, and Candice M. Crawford, 29, of Bradford, who pleaded guilty. Both had charges stemming from a traffic stop in April.
Mangione is charged with possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, a felony; alters, forges or counterfeits a certificate of title, registration card or plate, inspection certificate or proof of financial responsibility, a first-degree misdemeanor; manufacturing, etc., controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with the intent to deliver drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors; and summary charges.
Meanwhile, Crawford pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of marijuana-small amount for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia. Several other charges against her were withdrawn. She will pay fines and court costs.
According to the criminal complaint, on April 24, police pulled over a car that was registered to Mangione and driven by Crawford. Mangione was a passenger in the vehicle.
The complaint listed items that officers seized during a subsequent search of the vehicle: 25 mL of heroin, .5 grams methamphetamine, .5 grams marijuana, loaded needles, 1.5 naproxen pills, one acetaminophen/hydrocodone bitartrate pill, and one amphetamine/dextroamphetamine extended release capsule.
Mangione posted $20,000 bail.
Michael A. Payne, 30, of Bradford, had a charge of flight to avoid apprehension, a third-degree felony, bound to McKean County Court at a hearing before Luther.
At 12:16 a.m. Sept 10 in Foster Township, Payne jumped in the bushes and ran from an officer who was going to arrest him on full extradition warrants for state parole out of Harrisburg. Officers from three departments came to look for Payne but were unable to locate him that morning.
Payne is in McKean County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
