ST. MARYS — After coming one shot away from qualifying for the state tournament last year, Bradford’s Spencer Cornelius made the most of his opportunity this year.
The junior shot a 74 on Saturday at Bavarian Hills Golf Course to win the state qualifier and advance to the PIAA golf championships, which will take place on Oct. 20 at Heritage Hills Resort in York (AAA).
Cornelius won his second straight District 9 Class AAA individual title last week.
“(Spencer’s) really excited to get down there and see how he can compete against the best in the state,” Bradford boys golf coach Travis Faulkner said.
Cornelius won the one-day state qualifier by 13 strokes, shooting a 3-over par. He shot 1-under par on the back nine to take control of the tournament.
Senior Jack Tim finished his career at Bradford by shooting a 108 and finishing 10th.
“He was a vital part to our program,” Faulkner said of Tim. “He’ll be missed.”
The state qualifier consisted of seven golfers from District 9 as well as seven from District 8.
