Smethport woman serving prison time for two cases

A Smethport woman accused in two cases — an access device fraud case and an escape case — was sentenced to state prison Thursday in McKean County Court.

Bobby J. Reid, 38, will serve six months to two years in prison with credit for 57 days of time served for a charge of escape in one case and a charge of access device fraud in the other. On Aug. 13, Reid pleaded guilty to allegations that on March 4, 2019, she used her daughter’s Access card to obtain money; Then, when Reid was later incarcerated, she was granted a furlough to attend a treatment program and failed to return to McKean County after she left the treatment program.

Also in court, Mervin L. Martin, 73, of Turtlepoint, was sentenced to one year of probation for a charge of recklessly endangering another person. He is also to possess no weapons, and he is not allowed contact with children unless a competent adult is available to supervise. Martin pleaded guilty Aug. 20 to allegations that on March 24, he placed two juveniles in danger by allowing an 8-year-old to play with a loaded shotgun, which fired a shot and struck a 9-year-old boy. On Thursday, District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer noted that the boy was struck in the leg, and there was concern at one point that the leg would have to be amputated. It was not amputated, and the boy is making improvements with ongoing treatment.

Matthew G. Confer, 26, of Bradford, will serve one to two years in McKean County Jail with credit for 111 days of time served for a charge of criminal attempt-theft by unlawful taking and a summary charge. Court records filed at the time of Confer’s arrest alleged that in the early morning hours of May 23, he used a knife to try to break into vehicles in Bradford City and put the knife in the ignition of one vehicle.

Dana R. Caston, 58, of Port Allegany, will serve 101 days to one year in McKean County Jail with credit for 101 days of time served and one year of consecutive probation for charges of loitering and prowling at night time, harassment disorderly conduct and summary charges. Court records filed at the time of his arrest alleged that Caston, while under the influence of alcohol, was knocking on neighbors’ doors in the middle of the night and requesting they have sex with him.

Frederick W. Cochran Jr., 67, of Port Allegany, pleaded guilty to a charge of simple assault. According to Shaffer, on July 28, Cochran pushed his wife into a door, injuring her head and arm; his wife was unable to move her arm, which was swollen.

Michael Dowell, 46, of Eldred, will serve one year of probation for a charge of disorderly conduct. Court records filed at the time of his arrest alleged that on April 14, Dowell was actively aggressive toward police officers, ambulance personnel and hospital staff when he was being involuntarily admitted to Bradford Regional Medical Center for psychological reasons.

Noel J. Nord, 25, of Smethport, will serve one year of probation for a charge of hindering apprehension. On Aug. 20, Nord pleaded guilty to allegations that on May 14, she assisted a known fugitive — Kaitlyn Billyard — to hinder apprehension and conceal her location.

Karen A. Matteson, 35, of Arlington, Texas, was sentenced to 22 days to six months in McKean County Jail with credit for 22 days of time served and one year of concurrent probation for charges of DUI-controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and summary charges.

Donald J. Reed, 32, of Eldred, will serve six months of probation for a charge of DUI-general impairment and a summary charge.

Beverly D. Watson, 24, will serve a term of probation for a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
