The McKean County Democratic Committee is being crafty this election season.
The group is raising money by selling hand-sewn masks that endorse Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
On Monday, a group comprising committee members, as well as Biden fans who are not on the committee, gathered at a local church to sew. What came out of the workshop was about 75 masks, said Marty Wilder, party chair.
Wilder anticipates about 100 masks overall will be available for purchase, as a few women took material home to sew more.
She talked about how the fundraising project came to be.
“Betsy Costello, a committeewoman from Bradford Township, came up with the idea which allowed people to share political camaraderie and raise funds for the committee,” Wilder explained.
People can purchase masks on the McKean County Democrats Facebook page, or by contacting individual members. Masks are $5 each.
The mask sale is just one of the ways the committee is finding to share its message with the public. Wilder touched on some of those outreach efforts when she talked about how the proceeds from the mask sale will be spent.
“Money will go into the treasury to help with campaign-related expenses — yard signs, mailings to the general public, advertising in various formats, and for material to encourage voter-registration and voting by mail,” she explained.
Wilder noted that enthusiasm for the Biden-Harris ticket has been through the roof — way more than was evident four years ago in the presidential election.
“I’m amazed on a daily basis by the excitement I’m seeing from Democrats. It’s electric,” she said.
The local committee has had many requests for yard signs, and more signs have been ordered through the Pennsylvania Democratic Committee, according to Wilder.
“Four years ago, many people were honestly apprehensive about putting signs in their neighborhoods. Not this year. They are going like hot cakes,” she said.
In addition to extensive voter outreach by way of postcards, phone calls, texts and emails, plans are in the works for a drive-thru activity. The committee is planning a drive-thru ice cream social, where the party can share information on topics such as voter registration and voting by mail.
The party is focusing efforts not only on the presidential race, but also on the campaign for state Senate for the 25th District. Margie Brown, a former Bradford woman, is the Democratic nominee.
