CROSBY — As part of their tradition of community service, members of John Berg Memorial American Legion Post #976 in Crosby presents scholarships annually to graduates of Smethport Area Junior-Senior High School.
This year’s winners of the $1,000 memorial awards are three members of the Class of 2020: Morgan Himes, Erin Herzog and Haley Leet.
Himes, who studied early childhood education for three years at the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center, plans to major in this same curriculum at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford with the goal of becoming a pre-kindergarten or kindergarten teacher.
Her extra-curricular activities included senior class co-president, cheerleader for six years, volleyball for four years, student council and color guard, both for two years, and softball, one year.
Himes’s community service included assisting student council members in setting up and tearing down after the Smethport Area School District Foundation’s craft show last winter.
Herzog will major in chemistry/pre-pharmacy at Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
In high school, she was active in volleyball, golf, basketball, track and field, trap team, student council, peer tutoring, marching, concert and jazz bands, choir and show choir, and she assisted with blood drives. She was also a class officer, sixth grade camp counselor and member of the National Honor Society.
Outside of school, Herzog participated in the Tough Hubber event, Norwich Sportsmen’s Fishing Derby and Spring Raffle, swim team and craft fair.
Leet will major in nursing at Gannon University in Erie.
Her extra-curricular activities were prom committee, DECA, student council, peer tutoring, peer Helpers, cheerleading and volleyball.
In the community, Leet participated in bake sales, the 30-hour famine, serving breakfast at her church, and dressing as the Easter Bunny for the Kane Community Center.
