Local area children from grades one through six learned to flip, mix and measure during the Kulinary Kids workshop Monday at the Bradford Area Public Library, led by Laurie Maletto of Penn State Extension and Debbie Deane, youth services librarian.
The free six-week course taught children the basics of cooking, with the use of spatulas, whisks, measuring cups and griddles.
During classes, children tackled useful life skills such as setting tables, using measuring cups and flipping pancakes. On Monday in particular, the item on the menu was pizza quesadillas.
Before getting started, Maletto emphasized the most important part of cooking — washing your hands — as the children lined up to use the sink.
After loading up their plates with soft-shelled tortillas, cheese, turkey pepperoni and pizza sauce, Maletto and Deane helped each child roll and flip their quesadillas into a tasty meal.
One of the favorite meals from past classes seemed to be the pancakes. Why?
“They taste good,” said participants Kendall Frederico and Maya Peters.
When asked if they’d like to make their pancakes in any special shapes, like Mickey Mouse, the duo exclaimed “Blake Shelton!”
“It’s my dream, in the next 2 or 3 years, to expand the library kitchen and offer more in-depth cooking classes,” said Dean.
The class will reconvene for the sixth and final week with more culinary delights from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Dean and Maletto hope to host more children’s cooking courses in the future.
