PORT ALLEGANY — It’s not often a team has been able to hold Port Allegany to fewer than 35 points over the past few seasons.
This year, it happened just once prior to Tuesday night — a 48-32 defeat to North Clarion in early December — but against rival Smethport, an off night offensively was again the Gators’ downfall.
Port Allegany (7-10, 6-6) scored just two points in the first quarter and finished the game with just 10 made field goals en route to a 44-31 loss to the Hubbers.
Howie Stuckey, averaging 28 points per game over his last seven contests prior to Tuesday, was held to just 10 against Smethport.
“(Smethport) really didn’t do a whole lot of anything differently than the other teams we’ve played this year,” Port A coach Kyle Babcock said. “They came out and face-guarded Howie, but we never could get anything going. Just a poor offensive game for us.”
For the Hubbers (11-7, 8-5), which swept the season series with their rivals, Layne Shall registered 15 points. He was a potent 9-for-10 at the free-throw line for Smethport. Port Allegany committed 22 fouls in the game, with Stuckey fouling out and the Hubbers knocking in 17 free throws.
Connor Alfieri added nine points and Richie McDowell seven for a Smethport team that’s won five straight games.
