SMETHPORT — Jay Acker wasn’t entirely sure how to describe Smethport’s 48-47 victory over Port Allegany Thursday night.
He was pleased that his Hubbers beat their longtime rivals and were able to rally from a 10-point deficit, but saw plenty of room for improvement from his charges.
“Our first half was pathetic,” he asserted. “We had zero stats, six total rebounds…it was bad. Maybe my halftime speech was good today, I don’t know. We came out in the third quarter and made shots. And the fourth quarter we clawed our way back in.”
Indeed, the Hubbers (4-4, 3-2) erased a five-point Port A lead heading into the fourth quarter and outscored the Gators 17-11 over the final eight minutes.
The ending was far from dramatic, however, according to Acker.
“Port was down three with probably 20 seconds left and Jordan Card drove in for a layup and brought it within one,” he said.
“(After that), I honestly can’t even make it exciting. We were at the free-throw line and we kept getting rebounds and going back to the line and ran the clock out that way.”
Richie McDowell had a team-high 14 points for the Hubbers, which had a balanced scoring attack that featured four players net at least eight points. Layne Shall had a team-high two 3-pointers and finished with eight tallies.
For Port Allegany (2-6, 1-3), Howie Stuckey had 16 points — including his team’s lone 3-pointer — and Jordan Card added 14. The Gators have lost each of their last three games by eight points or fewer.
