While filming the upcoming indie film “Blue Eyes,” Jason Paul thought Veterans Square in his hometown of Bradford would be the perfect spot.
Paul recently co-wrote and produced the indie short with Renee Ashley from Buffalo, N.Y., whom he met at an August film festival in Buffalo.
The crew, along with production assistant, second camera and boom operator, David O’Anderson of Buffalo N.Y. and director of photography, Ben Chatfield of Palmyra, N.Y., took to the streets of Bradford Saturday to shoot the beginning of the film after receiving the go-ahead by Bradford Mayor Tom Riel.
“This is a beautiful area to film,” said O’Anderson as Chatfield was setting up the scene overhead with a drone.
While setting up, the crew laughed as a flock of curious birds chased the drone around the skies.
“It’s about a guy who’s down on his luck after a tragic accident. He lost his family in a tragic fire and becomes homeless,” explained Paul.
Through a series of meetings, the woman, played by Ashley, shows kindness to the homeless man, played by Paul, by meeting him every day and giving him money.
“Through meeting her randomly, he gains a sense of peace and realizes there are good people in the world,” said Paul. “At the end, she finds out he’s saved all of the money she’s given him and he gives her a scarf as a gift to show his appreciation.”
“One of the messages of the film is to not judge people and to give everyone a chance,” explained Ashley.
The crew has aspirations for the film to be featured in the Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals. They expect the film to be released for the general public’s viewing in roughly a year.
