ST. MARYS — There’s no substitute for experience, and Bradford found that out in its first dual match of the season, a 46-27 defeat at St. Marys.
The Owls (0-1) picked up a few impressive victories on the night, but the Dutchmen ultimately were too much for a Bradford squad that is littered with newcomers.
“I can’t complain a whole lot about the way the kids wrestled,” said Bradford head coach Jamie Miller. “Unfortunately, more than half of (our) lineup doesn’t have a whole lot of experience, and some don’t have any. So there’s stuff we have to work on.”
Newcomer Devin Poe provided a pleasant surprise on the night for the Owls in the 113 pound weight class, as he pinned St. Marys’ Tanner Quackenbush in 58 seconds.
“He pulled off that fall over Quackenbush, and Devin has never wrestled before in his life,” Miller said. “He just did everything right.”
Elsewhere, Bradford’s Lucas Laktash decisioned Connor Gausman, 4-0, in the 126 class, and Drake Hayden pinned St. Marys’ Kaden Snelick in 3:17 in the 152 pound group.
Derek Sunafrank (170) also won by pin over Raivis Bobby at the 3:24 mark.
The Owls will look to regroup on Wednesday, when they host Port Allegany.
In the junior varsity matchup, St. Marys won 72-6. Bradford’s lone victory was by Luke Kerr, who picked up his first career victory.
