Port A boys sink 11 treys in opening win; NoPo, ECC win

SHEFFIELD — Port Allegany wasted little time getting their potent offense clicking at the start of the 2019-20 season.

One of the top shooting teams in the North Tier League a season ago, the Gators hit 11 3-pointers as part of a 72-49 season-opening victory over Jamestown (Pa.) in the first round of the Sheffield Tournament Friday.

Leading that 3-point barrage for Port Allegany (1-0) was Howie Stuckey with six treys as part of his game-high 33 points. Teammate Jordan Card made four 3-pointers and finished with 26 points.

It was the first career victory for first-year Port Allegany head coach Kyle Babcock.

“We hustled very well and were able to push the ball late in the third quarter and that’s when we extended the lead,” he said. Forced some key turnovers and kept pushing. We forced them to take a timeout and then made quite a few threes.”

Indeed, the Gators outscored the Muskies 37-21 in the second half which helped Port A advance to the championship game of the tournament today.

Darian Keyser had three 3-pointers and led Jamestown with 26 points.

“Howie stepped up and his 3’s definitely helped us,” Babcock said. “Overall we shot the ball pretty well and played with some good intensity.”

Slawson had 15 points while teammate Carter Anderson had a game-high 26 that included 12 from the charity stripe.

Leading just 29-19 at the half, Northern Potter’s offense exploded for 21 points in that third quarter to pull away and secure the victory.

Ezra Sprow had a big game in the paint for NoPo (1-0) hauling down 10 rebounds to go with his six points.

“It was a little rough to begin with, but we kind of got the momentum going in the third quarter,” Northern Potter head coach Derek Erway said.

“We are already dealing with injuries, but we played well. Still have to clean up our passing a bit more but it was a good way to start the season off.”

Leading Oswayo Valley (0-1) in double-figures was Caiden Black with 10. Gunner Bean had nine points and went 2-for-6 from the free-throw line in a game that featured 50 fouls.

The game served as the first round of the Jack Bush Tournament at Cowanesque Valley. Because the tourney only had three teams enter, however, Oswayo Valley will play CV today and NoPo will play them on Monday.
