HOLLIDAYSBURG — A 28-point second quarter from the Lady Golden Tigers sent the Bradford girls basketball team to a season-opening defeat in the Hollidaysburg Tournament Friday.
Alysea Bell led Hollidaysburg with 11 points, while Allyson Hataiik added 10 and Morgan O’Neil chipped in 9.
For Bradford (0-1), Erica Marshall and Hannah Lary provided the only offense, each scoring 15 points. Marshall knocked down three 3-pointers, while Lary had two.
“We fought hard,” Bradford coach Bob Hannon said, “but we were overmatched in the sense of talent level. We had a lot of young girls playing that were trying to find themselves and this is a tough stage to find yourself on.”
The Lady Owls play Central today in the consolation round of the tournament. Hannon said he expects a better result in that game.
“I think girls played as hard as they could have possibly played tonight,” he said. “And that’s why you play, to get better at it. I expect we’ll do better tomorrow now that we got some of the jitters out of it.”

Sheffield Tournament
Port Allegany 74, Sheffield 17
SHEFFIELD — The Lady Gators held Sheffield to just four points in the first half and Cailey Barnett soared for 32 points — including five 3-pointers — on the other end of the court to power Port A to a decisive season-opening win.
Barnett had eight steals to go with her 12 made field goals in the game to help the Gators (1-0) explode for a 40 point first half.
“Obviously a big start for her senior year,” second-year Port A head coach Jamie Evens said. “She really got the team rolling the first half and in the first game of the season that’s tough to do; she really spearheaded us.”
Joining Barnett in double-figures was teammate Shannon Curfman with 16. Port A’s Evin Stauffer did not score, but contributed with six rebounds and five assists in the game.
Bree Garzel chipped in seven points and six assists for the Lady Gators, which play Mercer in the championship game of the tournament today.
“Our guard play was solid and we limited turnovers as you can tell by our assist numbers,” Evens noted. “But it’s going to be a much bigger challenge for us (today) against a physical Mercer team.”

East Forest Tournament
Smethport 45, Tidioute Charter 36
MARIENVILLE — Erin Herzog had a game-high 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to power the Lady Hubbers to a victory in the opening round of the East Forest Tournament.
Herzog and Smethport led Tidioute Charter by just two points at halftime, but coach Chad Goodman credited a defensive change at the break as the key to his team pulling away.
“I thought in the second half defensively we really turned up the pressure on them,” Goodman noted. “We went into a triangle-and-two defense and really limited (Nakeisha Krause) in the second half.”
Indeed, while Krause had 18 points in the game, the Lady Bulldogs were held to just 10 points total over the final 16 minutes.
For Smethport (1-0), Sabrinna Tanner had 10 points and seven rebounds and MyKayla Deyarmin knocked in nine points — including Smethport’s lone 3-pointer — to go along with her five assists.
“It’s good to get Erin started early in the season and hopefully we can build her confidence,” Goodman said of the senior forward. “It’s nice to get started on a winning trend this year and hopefully we can pick up another win (Saturday) as well.”

Otto-Eldred 53, Eisenhower 44
RUSSELL — The Lady Terrors outscored Eisenhower 15-6 in the second quarter and never looked back en route to season-opening victory on Friday.
Jadelyn Spinney scored a team-high 20 points for Otto-Eldred, including four 3-pointers. Kaylay Heller added 18 points on seven made field goals and four free-throws. Katie Sheeler and Haley Cousins each tallied six points. Cousins scored all of her points from beyond the arc.
“Wins are wins,” Otto-Eldred coach Shawn Gray said. “It was a rough win but we got through it. Eisenhower is a tough place to play due to the distance. I thought Kayley [Heller] carried us through a few quarters. Spinney also did well with four steals and four assists and our freshman Katie Sheeler saw the court well with five steals and three assists.”
Lilse Renninger scored 14 points to lead Eisenhower, while Bella Marino finished with 11 points.
Otto-Eldred travels to Oswayo Valley on Tuesday.
