Brookville hands Kane third straight loss; O-E tops Tide

BROOKVILLE — High school offenses can usually overcome a couple of turnovers or self-inflicted errors in a game.

But five interceptions — including three in the span of six plays — are enough to sink even the most potent of passing attacks.

Brookville used those interceptions, as well as five passing touchdowns, to overcome four interceptions of its own and score a critical 33-14 victory over Kane to remain tied with Ridgway atop the D9 Large School Division.

On the back of those three early turnovers, the Raiders (7-1) built a 20-0 lead. Quarterback Jack Krug delivered on touchdown passes of 6, 19 and 12 yards to three different receivers before Kane (5-3) got on the board with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Zuke Smith to Jake Alcorn late in the second quarter.

When the Raiders grabbed their three-touchdown lead, Kane had just four first downs and 64 yards of offense.

Krug, meanwhile, threw four interceptions — three in the first half and one in the second — but it led to zero Kane points. Bobby Rumcik and Harley Morris each had two interceptions for the Wolves. Brookville capitalized with 19 points off the Kane interceptions.

The Raiders built their lead in the third quarter with Krug touchdown passes of 28 and 65 yards to Cole LaBenne and Ian Thrush, respectively.

Kane scored the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter on a 54-yard pass from backup quarterback Harley Morris to Alcorn.

Kane will look to snap its three-game skid in the regular season finale next week against St. Marys.

Brookville, meanwhile, will travel to Ridgway in a battle of one-loss teams atop the division.

    SMALL SCHOOL CROSSOVER

    Otto-Eldred 38, Curwensville 22

CURWENSVILLE — After four consecutive losses that culminated in a 73-12 defeat to Coudersport a week ago, Otto-Eldred found its way back into the win column.

The Terrors (2-6), keyed by a 24-point third quarter, outlasted Curwensville (1-7) to win for the first time since Week 1 against Cameron County.

O-E jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on a pair of Cole Sebastian touchdowns — the first a six-yard run and the other a 41-yard pass to Cameron Magee.

But the Golden Tide rallied in the second quarter to take a 15-14 lead into the break on a pair touchdown runs from Dan McGarry (one yard) and Damion Brady (six yards).

And then came the Terror onslaught.

Sebastian threw for two more touchdowns, both to Ethan Smith, and also ran one in, and the Terrors capitalized on all of their two-point conversions to jump out to a 38-15 lead going into the final quarter.

Curwensville managed to hit paydirt one final time on a six-yard Brady run, but the O-E defense held strong otherwise.

Sebastian threw for 259 yards and three scores, and also rushed for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Smith hauled in six receptions for 91 yards and a pair of scores — all team-highs — while Magee finished with 41 yards and a score on a pair of receptions. O-E outgained Curwensville 381-238 on the night.

The Terrors host Sheffield next week in each team’s season finale.

Penny capped the game off in the final quarter on a 55-scamper.
