BROCKWAY — It was a big late season test for the Port Allegany boys soccer team.
And despite tallying just three shots on target, the Gators did enough to come away with a big win with the postseason fast approaching.
Port Allegany scored six minutes into the game and held on late to secure a 1-0 non-league victory over two-time defending District 9 Class A champion Brockway on Thursday afternoon.
A day after notching four goals against Coudersport, the Gators’ (11-3) Howie Stuckey scored the lone goal against Brockway on an assist from Simon Burleson.
From there, Port Allegany battled to preserve that one-goal advantage in a game that coach Aaron Clark said he was trying to get his team to work on things defensively.
“We were focusing on defense today with the goal of trying to get ready for the playoffs now,” Clark said. “Obviously you’d like to score more than one, but tonight it was good enough.”
In goal, Ty Guilds made nine stops for Port Allegany.
“Ty came up with some spectacular saves and the back line in front of him I think played their best game of the season,” Clark said.
