WHAT IS IT?: Harold Whitney of Bradford discovered this caterpillar — “caught and released Sunday” — roughly three inches in length, at the practice field above Poplin Avenue.
It has long, black bristles — sparser than on a woolly bear caterpillar — but no orange bristles, Harold tells us. However, there is orange coloring on his skin at segment separations.
So, readers, can anyone tell us what kind it is?

Did you know?: A caterpillar’s only job is to eat. During the larval stage, the caterpillar has to eat enough to sustain it through the pupal stage into adulthood. If the caterpillar does not eat enough, it might reach adulthood but will not be able to produce eggs.
A caterpillar has as many as 4,000 muscles in its body. The caterpillar’s head capsule alone has 248 individual muscles, with 70 controlling each body segment. Each of the 4,000 muscles is innervated by one to two neurons.
