SHEFFIELD — Coudersport struck early and struck often on the ground en route to a 67-6 victory over Sheffield in District 9 Small School North action Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (3-0, 1-0) churned out 413 yards on the ground on 46 carries as a team, and struck for nine rushing touchdowns on a day where they controlled the game from start to finish.

“We came out wanting to clean some things up (in the offense). The last couple games went okay, we did well, but there was stuff we needed to clean up,” Coudy head coach Tom Storey said. “I think we came out today and we executed better, so it was a good day. Now we have two weeks here to get rested up and get ready to go again.”

Quarterback Hayden Keck and running back Travis Gleason led the Falcon charge. Keck, who attempted only two passes on the day, rushed for 118 yards and a pair of scores on 10 carries, and Gleason added 103 yards and four touchdowns on eight carries.

At one point, Gleason scored on three consecutive carries from four, 30 and 10 yards out.

“With running the option, the whole idea is for the quarterback and running back to have big days,” Storey said of the duo’s performance. “Today it was about getting everybody in there to get their hands on the ball. (Keck and Gleason) played a big part, and they always will.”

With those two in the game, the Falcons raced out to a quick 22-0 lead after the first quarter before extending that advantage to 54-0 by halftime.

Behind them, Brandt Kightlinger logged 56 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, and Dylan Kelly racked up 94 yards and a five-yard score on nine carries.

“Dylan is a 10th-grader, so he’ll be coming up through for us. Today was good experience for him,” Storey said. “And Brandt is probably going to be filling in on some different positions next year, so the idea was to get him out there. They’re going to be big guys for us in the next year.”

The Coudersport defense had a dominant day, as well. The Falcons forced eight Sheffield (0-3, 0-2) turnovers — five fumble recoveries and three interceptions — including a 40-yard pick-six by Daniel Frame.

For the Wolverines, meanwhile, the day was filled with few highlights. The Sheffield offense sputtered, and did not record a first down until midway through the second quarter.

There were some signs of life near the end of the game, however, as quarterback Aujamiere Slappy-Washington led the Wolverines to the end zone with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Mirahn Price with 2:25 left in the game.

Slappy-Washington finished with 90 yards passing on 20 attempts. He threw for one touchdown, but was picked off three times.

Sheffield head coach Chris Korbar says the Wolverines must build on that late game momentum, and begin to incorporate a more effective run game. The Wolverines rushed for just 74 yards on Saturday.

“There was the one plus there at the end,” Korbar said of the offense’s touchdown. “We’re still working on our run blocking to get our run game going a little bit. Once that gets going, we’re going to take off.”

Korbar also feels that with another week or two of practices, the Wolverines will become more cohesive as a unit.

“I think we were a little injured and overwhelmed today. We knew it was going to be a tough team (in Coudersport) coming in,” Korbar said. “There were a lot of good building blocks for us… We’re going to grow and be better, and we’re going to keep gelling together. A couple weeks down the road, I think we’ll start seeing some improvement.”

The Wolverines will need to start regrouping quickly, as they visit 3-0 Redbank Valley Friday for a 7 p.m. game.

Meanwhile, Coudy enters its bye week at 3-0 and with plenty of momentum. Storey says the Falcons are going to continue to sharpen some things, and also add a few wrinkles to the playbook.

“Basically, we’ll just be cleaning things up. We’re going to put some more stuff in as we go through the season, too,” he said. “The guys are doing good, getting healed up. We’re just going to continue putting stuff in to keep things changing so that nobody knows what we’re doing.”
